Leak Survivors - A Little Help!

Recommended Posts

My "leak" was never visualized..but due to abcesses on spleen -fistula to the liver-plus pneumonina, fever, effusin, thoracentecis that drained 2+ containers of pus that grew out strep, empynema, etc.....38 days in patient, one explor lap, jpeg feeding tube, interventional radiology - they even put TPA in them to promot drainage. - without enough meds. god how i hate chest tubes and drains!!!!!!!!!!!i am! Unfortunately, for the last 3 weeks i cannot keep any food down and liquids either shoot right out or i urp them up. will have endoscopy this coming week. likely stenosis. I WILL NOT EAT at all now. so done with living with my face in barf bowl! hope no leak. feel cruddy and i so scared to find out something that keeps me in the the hospital. outpatient - no problem. i would even go back on feeding tube which requires OR general surgery. i am THAT desperate to feel better. SO i hope that you all are on the mend. I sympathize so much with you. Hope 2013 brings health to everyone!!!!!!!!!!

Hard to believe that I could feel "lucky" with my leak.

I'm so sorry you two have been through and are still fighting so much after your surgeries. I hope that 2013 brings you closure...of your leaks that is :) And that this nightmare can end!

What are the different symptoms for a leak?

Hi LessOfMeIsMore

My mother is slowly getting better. For her age + Diabetese, it is not easy to get better fast and above all she was not prepared for it. I encouraged her and did not do my homework. Wanted to get gastric balloon but got this instead per doc's recommendation.

Anyhow, I like to speak to someone and assure my mother that she will get better soon.

I am specially curious to understand what is coming from drain? is it the food or internal wound's pus? The color of drain is like dark chocolate.

It will be nice if I can communicate over phone but do not know if I can give my phone no on line. I am desperate enought to do anything.

Lila: Since you have gone through same, can you comment on the color of drain?

Just pretend that you got sleeve and then leak. then follow the diet given to people with leak (protien shake) for a month then you will close to your target without spending money or going through suffering.

I lost 10 pounds just in sympathy (could not see my mother in pain and suffering, lost the appetite) when i did not have much extra weight at the first place.

There are other less invasive procedures, eg. gastric balloon (though I heard someone got Water in lungs due to blockage in the digestive path due to balloon) lap band etc.

If you can still not loose appetite and don't loose weight, just go to hospital and see all the mess, I am sure you can find someone with this case.

I'm a year out from my leak now, had a feeding tube for 4 months and off work the whole time. A couple fistulas, abscess. Oh the joy. But it is a distant memory now. I am at goal - no way was I not going to get here after everything I went through! Sometimes I wonder if having RNY instead would have saved me all the complications - but they just have different ones at different times.

Atul,

I am unsure of the drain color...as far as I was told it should be clear or go to the ER

If you can message these people they may have more help for you as they suffered from leaks:

4aLongerLife

jasleeve

RawrrAshleex3

I'm hoping you find out as much information as possible.

You and your mother need support and we are here for you.

Sometimes you just have to keep posting til you get the person you need...

As far as I have seen, most patients with leaks stop taking liquid and food by mouth and have TPN.

I pray someone sees our post and will contact you!!

Please continue to reach out here..I will try my best to help you find answers!

I really believe the " you will breeze right through" is the kiss of death! If I am every in a pre op waiting room and some one says those words to me I will run screaming through the halls gown flapping wildly for all to see!

Of course if they ever get me back to OR it will be because I am to sick to crawl away from them.

My question to all of u would u change the decision to have a sleeve or would u do it again! Would u inform and encourage people like myself who are still in the beginning stages not to go through it with the surgery

I didn't have a leak but let me say after a bowel being cut, No if I was on the other side and understood how I could own one of those rare complications NO!, I would not do this to myself or family. I beg anyone considering this surgery consider the real possibility you may not make it and then all those years they promise to add to your life is gone along with all the years you would of had if you did not do the surgery.

OR........... you can think of the years that obesity is adding cancer possibilities to your death sheet or a heart attack or stroke.

IDK what is the right "choice." I am a food addict. And having open heart surgery scares me more to this day than anything I've been through yet. That and cancer. I have a high prevalence of both in my genetic history. Obesity is related to both.

Everyone should read the "worst" threads. Feel free to inbox me if you have questions regarding my story. I totally left out about the chest tubes that I had.... slipped my mind, there was so much in such a short time. But this experience or say, a heart attack? I would chose this experience. But we all have our choices to make and I cannot undo mine. If I could undo it, perhaps I would choose differently... IDK.

I am sorry to hear about your mum. My drains were coloured, mostly yellow and green, some had blood in it at one point. It was never dark brown that I remember. But after reading some of the responses here, wow, mine perhaps wasn't too bad. I spent 56 days in hospital but haven't been back. I have been eating normal food for a while now and things seem to be getting back to normal. I have even started exercising. I've lost over 100 pounds since my operation in September 2012. A leak sucks and it's a really hard road to recovery and way longer than I ever expected. If I could turn back time there is no way I would do this again however now I am here, healthy and loosing the weight, I am really glad it's done. Every day I see new benefits from it - I will post a before and now photo (I still have about 100 pounds to loose) - and there is no way I could have lost this amount of weight in 3 months without this op. People used to tell me it would get better - I thought they were lying lol. But it does and it really has been worth it for me (now I am well I can say that lol).

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
