My surgery is in 6 days (10/31), so last night I began writing a "Letter to Me" as suggested by my doctor. (Obviously, the purpose is to record the reasons you decided on WLS in case you later have second thoughts or need a bit of motivation to stay on track.)

Writing this letter led me to think about my fears and what I kept returning to was my fear of gaining the weight back. I'm not afraid of the surgery, the pain, or even the drastic changes required in lifestyle and eating choices. I'm not even afraid of not losing weight. I know I'll be successful because I've done it so many times before. What I'm afraid of (we're talking "heart beating out of your chest type fear"), is that I'll gain it all back. (This is certainly exacerbated by the fact that I'm self-pay and having the surgery in the US.)

I'm guessing that I speak for most everyone in their 50's when I say that we've spent much of the past 40 years on one diet or another. And I'm guessing that most of us have had tremendous successes. Those successes are fabulous until they're followed by the inevitable regain, which of course, is followed by doubts and the self-loathing.

I have every intention of following my doctor's orders to a "T", I am optimistic, and frankly excited about this surgery; however, if I'm being truly honest with myself, I'd have to say that in most of my prior weight loss efforts, I had those same feelings. Every single time I was 100% certain that THIS TIME I WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!

Those of you that have fought this battle and are winning (I know it will never be truly "won" and the fight will continue the rest of our lives), what made this experience different? Why did this one succeed when the myriad of other attempts failed? What advice do you have for me? I truly welcome your comments and advice.

I haven't gotten far enough along to share my success. I can say that I share this exact fear and I'm willing to bet that many, if not most of us on here share that fear. Let's hope that through hard work, and supporting each other we can slay those fears once and for all.

I'm a year out and have lost 99 pounds. Your insurance against gaining the weight back will be the tiny size of your new stomach. Unless you graze all day, you won't get enough calories to gain weight back!

I share those same fears, as I'm sure many of us do. I've lost 50 lbs since I started with the Pre-op diet and getting sleeved. It's only been since Sept 5th and I'm already wondering if this is all I'm going to lose. My brain tells me that it's obvious that I will continue losing based on the small amount of food I eat now. But the underlying fear is still there. On the plus side, I'm no longer considered to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and I'm almost off all the diabetes meds. That is the real victory for me.

Thanks for being honest. I think most people have this fear, I know I do. I'm 53 and have been big most of my adult life. Succeeded on many diets too but never kept it off. It's awful. Maybe another thing to do is write down all the negatives to being obese. That will remind you in the future of how far you have come and what you don't want back in your life. HUGS.

MaryDrew-I think most of us who have Yo-Yo'd in the past have that same fear. Personally, I know that my decision to have WLS was to live a healthier life. Are there going to be struggles along the way? Yes! Am I better prepared me tally & physically? Yes! I have been blessed with a tool that I will have to use the rest of my life. I can say at an early 7 weeks out, I've already lost 32 pounds & feel better than I have in over 10 years.

I guess you could say the proof is in the (sugar free) pudding....

I have lost and regained on every diet I have ever been on usually within 3-6 months, but with the sleeve, the extra element of control, the commitment to myself stronger than ever before, is showing me that it would take conscious effort to suddenly start gaining weight. You cannot eat in quantity any longer, but if you chose to eat the wrong things, then your little but highly caloric diet could lead to gaining.

This is the best I've ever done in my adult life - and with only about 40 pounds left until goal, I know that YES IT WORKS and I am not deprived!!

Lovin my sleeve!!

I, too, have the same fears. I was sleeved six weeks ago and I feel like I am waiting for the big

Binge our how I will manage to gain the weight back our if I will even allow myself to hit my goal. Then I think about all the reasons why I did this in the first place and try to stay positive. I guess we have all failed at diets at one time or another... this is different. This is a permanent life change.

I am living the fear in real time. While I have been on maintenance for almost two months I feel like the first year I ate so little that now I can eat more and will gain. I still refuse to get on the scale but once a week, but my stomach now isn't the little miracle it used to be. I really have to make the decision whether or not I want to gain it back. I believe it is possible. Lose as much as you can in the beginning...

My biggest fear is not losing the weight/making goal. I was sleeved 4months ago, and have lost 50-53lbs (depending on the scale I use!) . Yeah. I know; be grateful for every pound lost. I am,but I am also so unnerved by the MEGA stalls I have had in these past 4 months. I am damned worried I will never get to goal.

I had the exact same fear pre-op. I could have written that post except my story is worse - I had already failed with one bariatric surgery (lapband in 2001). I was afraid of regaining PLUS having complications from the surgery - like I did with the lapband.

This was my argument of why I didn't want to give surgery another try. I was talking to my sleep apnea doctor who was the doctor who recognized that my obesity was killing me with the 52 BMI and encouraged me to consider surgery and he made an excellent point. He said well, what IF you do regain half the weight back... or even all of it over 5-10 years? That is still 5-10 years with 100% an improved quality of life - don't you think it would still be worth it? I had to answer honestly - YES!

I am committed to it being different this time. This time it will be permanent. Like you I have made that promise to myself before, but I have to keep trying and I need to believe that this time is different.

i am 62 and almost 11 months out. There is no way I can eat like I used to. With 85% of your stomach gone, you won't have to worry about it. It's hard to imagine until you start eating regular food and realize how your habits have changed. There is no way you can digest as much food as you did before. Also your taste buds may change a little, and you won't crave things like you did before. Please don't worry about it and take it day by day and yo will be fine. There is no way you won't lose.

I have this fear too... LOVE your honesty!! I am just 6 weeks post op and since I could start eating "real foods" again I have been so nervous to try stuff because I'm afraid of going back to my horrible pre op eating habits. I know it sounds kinda lame but I feel more comfortable at this point still having at least 1 Protein Shake a day and I usually also eat some tuna or chicken and cottage cheese or string cheese but like the other posts here said I'm amazed at how little I can eat before I feel full! I'm down 39 lbs so far and feeling great! For the first time in at least 10 yrs my BP is 120s/80s without meds!! and my energy level is fantastic!

You can't eat like you used to in one sitting, but if there is a will there is a way. You just gotta make sure you lose as much as possible in the beginning and if you notice a gain later on take action immediately.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
