Are Whole Eggs Worth It?

Recommended Posts

I love eggs, not egg whites alone (yuck). But os the Protein to calorie ratio for Whole eggs worth it? I ate 2 eggs hardboiled 130 calories and about 11 g of protein. I can have a pire Protein Shake with 35 g protein and 160 calories.

Real food verses fake food....my answer is on the side of real food.

I agree we should all be getting our Protein from real food if at all possible. But its your choice in the end. I personally have not had a shake in about 4 weeks and I'm so thankful - as I really can't stand them anymore.

It's easy - i get in about 50 grams a day (my goal per my size and weight is 45-50) which if you track your food intake is really easy. I have Breakfast here at the office - usually equals about 10-12 gms Protein - then i have a yogurt or cheese snack - another 5-10 gms - then lunch which i have meat and veggie (takes me all day to finish it,but i do it) and this is about another 15-20 gms of protein - then dinner is meat/veggie or salad where i can get another 10+ gms of protein - if you add it up it's easily 45+ grams a day. I really only track my protein because I'm not eating enough for carbs to even be a factor and getting in about 800 calories a day my fats are way below normal and so is the carbs....some days i have more carbs if i feel like a potato or something, but all in all it balances out. I even had two bites of bread pudding (my weakness...) today w/lunch.

plus, I decided NOT to have the mindset that I'm not going to deprive myself of anything - if I want chips, I'll eat some - which is usually about 6-8 chips total and I'm done. If I want something sweet - I'll eat it - but again it's only a bite or two and then I'm satisfied.

Just for me, I can't continue down the DIET road any longer.....so with my new portion sizes and my obsession with getting in all my Protein and fluids I never feel like I can't have something.

You are right. Real food is better. I don't mind the shakes. They help my sweet tooth chocolate addiction. A lot of bang for the buck on Protein as well.

When making eggs I use a mixture of both 1whole egg + 1 egg white. It really helps with the Protein level & reduces calories, carbs, cholesterol, etc. also I can't taste a difference.

I don't mind Egg Beaters too much. I usually add some picante sauce (Texas girl here!) and/or a little sprinkle of low-fat cheese and/or some chopped onions & bell peppers.

I do everything possible to avoid the Protein shakes - they are just too think now - ick!!!.

I sometimes add 1/4 scoop unflavored Protein powder to yogurt or cottage cheese. I also drink a clear Protein Drink daily (I like the ones by Cytosport - whey Isolate Protein Drink - 130 calories, 32 gr Protein and only 1 little carb). My goal is 60-80 gr Protein so this gets me 1/2 way there and gives me 17 oz fluids (actually 34 oz since I pour 1/2 of the drink into an empty bottle and fill both with ice & Water - sip these throughout the day). Of couse have an additional bottle of Water & something else to get in the 60+ oz (man, somedays that's hard!).

I've tried that too but I can't eat more than 1 egg so I switched to Egg Beaters. Maybe in a few more weeks I'll handle more than 1 measly egg. If not, I guess I can live with that :)

My NUT pushes whole eggs. That's good enough for me

I eat a lot of whole eggs. The most nutritious part of the egg is the yolk. I can't stand egg whites, too bland for me. I have spoke to a few nutritionists and they agree with eating the yolks also. We do need some cholesterol for our brain to function normally. :)

I know I had 2 eggs with a dab of light mayo in the mini processor, and I got way too full. My biggest problem is slowing down. i have been a super fast eater since my 3rd son (had PID with severe respiratory problems outgrew it, mostly, now 25) and then 6 more kids. Trying to slow down has been near impossible, so I get full before I realize it and take that extra 2 bites leaving me in agony for 1/2 to an hour...ugh. i will get the gist of it.

I really hate egg beaters, not sure why. They smell funny to me. i will try the 1 whole egg, and one egg white, tho, sounds good

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
