Foods You Definitely Can't Eat Early On?

Recommended Posts

Oh....I freakin' love Peanut Butter. Sometimes I would chase it with a swig of milk. 2 spoons of peanut butter and one drink of milk and I'm full. But I can't buy it because it's too easy for me to eat too much of it. I just recently bought some PB2 and I highly recommend it. It tastes great, has 1/4 the calories and because you have to mix it up it's not so easy to just grab and eat.

LouiseC I take it you have tried that.... Lol' date=' sound like something I have contemplated.[/quote']

Oh goodness no! I am someone who follows the advice of my surgeon, my NUT and then listens to my body. However, my surgeon did tell me not to purée a mars bar so I thought it bears repeating.

I have made and eaten the following while on my puréed diet this week:

*Homemade broccoli and cheese Soup

*Homemade White chicken Chili

*Tuna salad (tuna, mayo, and bread/butter pickles)

*Homemade chicken salad (chicken, mayo, red grapes, apples, and green onions)

*Chicken Enchilada with cheese sauce and enchilada sauce

*Low or nonfat Cottage Cheese

*Low or nonfat yogurt

*Weight Control Maple & Brown Sugar oatmeal

You can add unflavored Protein to a few of these things and probably not be able to tell the difference. The chicken chili, chicken salad, and enchilada were my favorites although I am very much looking forward to eating soft foods in a couple of days. :)

They sell single serve packs of natural peanut butter at Walmart. Those things are amazing! Portioned just right!

I don't really need to know that. I don't need the temptation.

They also sell the individual servings of guacamole....those are good too.

Lol! But you could buy one or two instead of a whole jar! Plus I like to take them when I'm on the go all day. Not such a guacamole fan unless I made it;-)

Everything Butterthebean said..but I will add this..I became lactose intolerant after my surgery..severely lactose intolerant..so that eliminated a lot on the puréed list for me. Cottage cheese was one of my favorite foods..I got very good at making soft meat purees that contained no milk products...also I used soy milk as well..I couldn't tolerant lactose free milk at all. So with that said, if you have explosive diarrhea..it could be the milk causing it. Now that I am 5 months out, I tolerate small amounts of milk and milk products..and I mean a very, very small amount!

Hey Sleeve,

I'd like the recipe for the white chicken chili and the enchiladas. I move to puréed on Thursday, and this is making my mouth Water. :-) Thanks

I am posting the chili recipe below (it was really good), but as for the enchilada, I had my husband go to our local Mexican restaurant and pick one up for me. I just ordered a chicken enchilada with extra enchilada sauce on the side (to help with mixing) and I removed the tortilla before I threw it all in the blender.

White Chicken Chili: 4 cans great northern Beans, 1 lb. chicken, 2 cloves garlic, 1 cup diced onion, 2 t. Oregano, 2 cans lowfat cream of chicken, 3 cups lowfat chicken broth, 1 can diced green chiles,6 oz low fat/fat free sour cream, and 2 cups low fat monterey jack shredded cheese. Cover your skillet with olive oil, add the diced onion, crushed garlic cloves, chicken (I added whole pieces and cut up later, but you can cut up beforehand if you want), and canned chilies. I set the stove top on about 4-5 and covered with a lid and let all of this cook together. I went ahead and got my larger pot ready and added the Beans, cream of chicken, broth, and oregano and let this start heating up on low to medium heat. After about 10-15 minutes (when my chicken was cooked through) I added the skillet ingredients (I cut my chicken up at this time) into the pot so that everything could cook together. I cooked on medium heat for about 30 minutes. At the very end, we added the 6oz of sour cream and the cheese and let simmer for another 5-10 minutes and then it was ready to go. I added about a tsp of sour cream on top of Soup right before I ate it. (I am using this during my pureed stage, but will probably have it again once I move onto solid foods bc of the Protein and the ability to add unflavored Protein powder as well.)

What should be things you stay away from when puréed start?

I have been eating low fat refried black Beans and Greek yogurt. I am anxious to start eating real food again.

My NUT told me to stay away from any grains, such as oatmeal, until I was on full solids. She states that the grains make your stomach work too hard at digesting and you want your tummy in a resting state so it can heal.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
