New....with a silly question

Recommended Posts

Happy to find a forum just for us canucks!

I have a really stupid question...what exactly are the "band rules" I keep reading about? Are they the rules in the lapband guide for patients?

Don't eat around your band. Don't eat the ice cream, chips, Soups, and other things that pass right through your band but could be easier to eat sometimes.

Don't over eat and stretch your pouch.

Don't eat grapes, and the skins on oranges, grapefruits, etc.

Don't drink carbonated beverages until or unless your surgeon says it is okay.

What no grapes!! I love grapes. I guess they are afraid you might inhale them accidently. I have already eaten them a hundred times, oops!

Here's a copy and paste from La_madam's link...

10 important rules

Here are ten rules for eating, drinking, and exercise that will help you get the best results you can with the LAP-BAND System. How willing you are to follow a new way of eating is key to making the operation a success.

1. Eat only three small meals a day.

2. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly (approximately 15 to 20 times a bite).

3. Stop eating as soon as you feel full.

4. Do not drink while you are eating.

5. Do not eat between meals.

6. Eat only good quality foods.

7. Avoid fibrous food.

8. Drink enough fluids during the day.

9. Drink only low-calorie liquids.

10. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.

Says who? I've never seen that rule, plus grape are healthy for you, have natural Fiber, don't get stuck and taste good...

(I can understand the skin issue on oranges and grapefruits but didn't realize anyone ever ate those... uck!)

Some additional rules I try to stick by...

Limit and/or avoid mushy, high calorie, liquid type food like Ice Cream, chocolate, shakes, etc.

Avoid bread because it's wasted calories and hurts like hell!

Avoid chips & doritos since they go down too easily.

Avoid carbonation (this rule seems flexible to different doctors) though it hurts me so I avoid completely.

Eat high quality Proteins first, then veggies. Limit simple carbs.

Mysherrijo: Its not the skins on the citrus fruits that we are to avoid, its the membrane that covers the individual sections of fruit.....apparently, according to my Dr., we can't chew them enough to properly break them down before swallowing. I have had oranges and was careful not to eat any membrane that might be tough but I haven't had a problem otherwise. I eat grapefruit and avoid the membrane entirely.

The only objection my Dr. has about grapes is the skin. It does depend on the type and quality of the grape, but some do have tough skins that we can't chew to a pulp so blockage is feared.

That's what I know...........

Carol

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
