Weight Gain Right After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I was just wonder if anyone else gained weight right after surgery? I was 209 when I went in for surgery that morning and when I got home 2 days later I'm now 217 grrrrrr. So I thought ok its just the Water weight from all the fluids they pumped in me from the IV but its been 4days and I'm still 217 will this weight come off? It really makes me mad I haven't ate nothing but my protien shakes and some sf Jello and sf popsiclkes. Please let me know if this happen to you the first week of surgery.

Thanks Belinda

Lol! You and I posted at the same time, and it's almost about the same problem. It just seems so odd to gain weight after surgery when so many people are dropping pounds like crazy!! As long as this process eventually works, I'm ok. Can you guys imagine if it didn't?? Yikes!! I had a dream last nite that my 'plumbing' was rewired and it Frankenstienish! And no, I hadn't taken an Ambien. ;-)

We should start a thread for 'Opposite of Losers: Gainers!'.

:-)

I have posted this same thing on different threads about this same subject. You should NOT weigh yourself right after your surgery. Wait until your follow up appointment and let your doctor weigh you. Don't be a slave to your scale. I cannot tell you how HARD the mental aspect of this journey is sometimes. Don't add to it by weighing yourself everyday. It just depresses you if you don't see the results you want. Put the scale away, better yet throw it away. I only weighed at doctor's appointments. I don't own a scale and I intend to keep it that way.

This surgery does work, you WILL see results!!

Carol, obviously what works for YOU is that YOU should not weigh in daily. I however, like many other people enjoy the losses and understand small gains. It's a reality check for me that I like and need so I should weigh in daily.

This is not a world of absolutes. Understanding that is really important to being successful in life :).

It is very hard to determine tone from print. I'm merely trying to inspire. It was not my intent to be taken any other way. I'm just another voice here I mean no more or no less than anyone else.

I agree with this opinion. When I think about healthy people in normal BMI ranges, how often do you think they weigh themselves? Probably, only at doctor's appointments. We (overweight/ obese) people put too much emphasis on what the scale says, and not enough emphasis on what a healthy person should be eating and how much exercising. We're still in the "diet" mentality, because before I started gaining so much weight, I never weighed myself, my only measurement was how my clothes fit. If they got too snug, then I knew I had to do something about it. Being a slave to the scale is not what someone does when they're making a lifetime commitment, it's what someone does to lose weight and meet a goal, that may or may not be maintained. My NUT told me that if I absolutely have to weigh myself, only do it twice a month, because I need to make decisions on how to become healthy, not how to make the scale move. I trust her and I believe there is truth in what she says.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
