Yes To Pasta. No To Pasta

There have been confusing report on whether or not as WLS patients we can or can not have Pasta. My NUT says not for about 6months. Others have said not at all (ever!). It's a bit conflicting.

I love pasta - wheat is my fave.

Has anyone else had or heard conflicting stories on whether or not we can eat pasta....at some point?

My NUT says to limit pasta--- limit it a lot. Apparently it does not provide much nutrition for the calories. Moderation would be the key, I think.

My NUT says 1ounce whole wheat, once a month if at all.

Thank you. I guess if I haven't eaten any since surgery, I can wait another 4 months. I miss my Pasta tho :(

Most things after around 6 months become "as tolerated." You'll just have to wait and see if you can tolerate it.

I can eat Pasta, rice, etc. with no problems - but I greatly restrict how much I let myself eat. What I call "white carbs" are a slippery slope with me. Fortunately, they don't include any of my favorites. :)

I tried 8 pieces of Dreamfield's low-carb (low glycemic) penne Pasta. That was all I could eat in one sitting. And it felt decadent to even be eating that! But I was cleared for "soft-cooked" pasta and I thought I'd go for it. Felt a little guilty afterwards because we're supposed to be changing our eating habits for the better and all that. But I agree with the above comments that if you do eat pasta, limit it as much as you can.

I was thinking that if I do eat some pasta, it would be one of my favorites...bow tie or spiral (I forget the Italian name for them). And would limit it to 1 cup a month (OMG...did I say that - a month :o!!). It's for the greater good - in me :D

Before certain people jump on here and start with the "you have to change the way you look at food" speeches, I should make it clear that my post about the Pasta was my experience with Pasta and that it should in no way be taken as an endorsement, recommendation, advocacy, affirmation, approval, or countersignature of similar behavior.

My relationship with food was apparently a lot different than some others on here. I was a "volume eater" becuase of other medical problems I had been having that were making me extraordinarily hungry all the time. But I know now, through counseling, that I really wasn't trying to fill a void in my life with food. I thought that might be the case, but it's not. I've only been obese for the last couple years when my other medical problems started. They were eventually corrected, but the weight stayed on. No, I wasn't always "thin" before my weight gain, but I had never put on that much weight. So the "void" wasn't my problem after all.

However, if you think the "void" problem might be part of why you are overweight, then I'd rethink why you might be craving pasta.

Crazy how a comment has to be clarified and qualified to avoid being attacked here,people are so Quick to ascribe intent....and usually wrong! Btw ,yes to pasta " as tolerated"

I wasn't able to eat Pasta until about six months out. My personal chef/licensed nutritionist/martial arts instructor/personal trainer agrees that swearing off all carbs is not good. Our bodies require a certain amount of healthy carbs. I don't recommend white pastas, but whole wheat pastas are fine in moderation. And be very careful when eating Pasta because just a small amount can fill you up very quickly because it tends to swell up once inside your tummy. I love eating whole wheat pasta with a nice EVOO and lots of veggies on it, major yummy.

I usually will have sauce and meat with literally 2 or 3 pieces of Pasta. I personally don't want or need anymore so I feel comfortable doing it. What I find helpful is eating ravioli usually stuffed with cheese and I'll mix in some Alfredo sauce and shrimp. Most of it is shrimp, and all I can eat is 1 or 2 ravioli.

Oh you have no idea. I find sometimes that I have to explain every nuance of my reasoning, take the logic step-by-step, and define every term I use. Otherwise people get fussy and bent out of shape over the things that I post.

I really don't know why. Lack of deductive reasoning?

if you are really craving Pasta and aren't cleared for it yet, check out emilybites.com she has a recipe for lasagna cupcakes (lasagna made in cupcake tins) using wonton wrappers instead of Pasta. it is amazing. i actually made these for my non op parents that don't know ive had surgery, and my dad said it was some of the best pasta that he'd had in a long time........ there's no pasta in it, but you'd never know.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
