Recommended Posts

Sitting in a room with 3 of my sisters and an uncle who were all diagnosed with diabetes around 50 and realizing that i was approaching the time that I might be a well. Since my surgery 3 months ago I am down 60 lbs, blood pressure has dropped and my feet don't hurt. I wish I had done this sooner.

Going into premature labor last year and having a 1lb 11oz baby girl. She is my miracle baby she is doing wonderful now and healthy. I carry a lot of guilt because I feel like if I would of been healthy and didn't weigh so much I wouldn't of put her through what I did. I have 2 appointments left this coming week and then my stuff will be sent to my insurance for approval. Praying everything goes good because I am very ready for a change ????

I was on vacation, an eco-tour in a third-world country in Central America, in a very remote area. I was at a local restaurant, and completely didn't see a set of granite stairs, fell down them, and landed like a sack of concrete after hitting three jutting granite shelves on the way down. I sustained several horrific injuries including a severe concussion, sinus hematoma, broken tibia, two sprained ankles, a sprained arm, and an internal muscle bleed that almost made me lose my leg.

I ended up in a horrific third-world hospital and then over the next 72 hours made my way home (3 flights) with all these untreated injuries and NO painkillers. I went straight from my local airport to the ER and was then put on bed rest for 4 months.

Prior to the fall, I had lost 35 lbs and was feeling great. During bed rest I regained that 35 and another 15, due to both the medications and not being able to move.

I knew, 100%, that my fall 1) could've been fatal if I had fallen even 1/2" differently and 2) wouldn't have been nearly as bad if I did not weigh as much as I did.

I never want to be in that position again. I want to be able to travel and be healthy. And while the kind of traveling I want to do will always involve risk, I want my mitigate my risk as much as possible.

My surgery is scheduled for early February.

Not being able to make it through Disney with my family. Getting heat stroke. My legs hurt all the time can't fix my knee till I lose weight and finally a hospital stay put me over the top. Many more reasons but those are the big ones.

Hope the surgery goes well in February!! I am so happy I had this done!! I did mine for health reasons and to get off many of my meds. I kept having more and more things going wrong with me because of my excess weight. Embarrassed to be out in public, etc. It's been two years since my surgery and I'm almost 68. I would do it again in a heart beat.

I'm 63 and if not now when? I feel my health has been skating along on the luck of my good familial genes. But last May I watched my dear friend, who was only 53, die of diabetes. That is one cruel ugly disease.

Anyway I have suffered with my obesity for over 35 yrs. I'm ready and on Dec. 30 my new life will begin. Hold on to your hats, it's going to be a rocky ride.

And good luck to you dear reader, on your path as well.

I could tell you the same story Paula, I'm 62 and overweight/obese most of my life, had the surgery in August and already feel 10 years younger. Don't worry, it may be less rocky than you think. Fortunately I've had no issues and my only regret is the same you'll hear again and again.............. why didn't I do this sooner? Good Luck

Not so funny... Little league years back. I wouldn't sit down in those flimsy aluminum chairs... I made a joke about it and my dear friend laughed( she was not small). She proceeded to sit and went ass over teakettle. In front of the whole 2 teams .... We both started weight loss and still work at it to this day. Not funny to us

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
