I am having a terrible pain around the incision to the left of my belly button! Its like a stinging pain and I can barely move when it hurts. It has been hurting on and off throughout post op (I will be 3 weeks post op on Tuesday) I expect pain, but I'm wondering what it is and when it will go away? :(

I did not have the pain you are talking about but I have heard some say that there are nerves that were cut threw and that can cause pain during healing. Hope you start feeling better.

It's the internal stiches in your abdomen wall healing and is very common. For some reason, the pain is more intense 2-4 weeks after surgery. I personally believe it's nerves reattaching and they're misfiring as they learn what to do again. It does get better and will go away. I found that a warm compress sometimes helped me, brings more bloodflow to the area. Just avoid pushing/pulling or picking up heavy items (more than 10 pounds) and you should be fine.

Thanks y'all, I will try a warm compress. Its an on and off pain, but when it comes, it HURTS! And right now, it is killing me!

Thanks for this thread. I am just at three weeks out and was having an easy time of it pain wise until last Wednesday. An area to the (my) right of the belly button has gone insane with pain upon movement! My doctor's office advice is to just take more pain meds which I am not doing for personal reasons. I was actually considering an ER visit but thoughts of the copay and coinsurance amounts made me think twice. Goodness knows I already have enough bills from the surgery itself. :) Now I'll just try to tough it out.

My guess is this is your largest incision. I had the same problem at the one by my belly button. My doc said it's the excess stomach was removed and it has an internal stitch that needs to heal too. Take it easy. Don't lift anything over 25lbs. I was told to take my pain meds and it soon went away. Whenever in doubt call your surgeon. Feel better. Hang in there it will get better.

Is yours on and off, too? Like mine is worse with movements, but sometimes I can move around just fine with minor pain. And as for pain meds, I ran out of my liquid loratab around a week post op..so I don't know what to do. And yep, the ER visit is out of question for me..too much money already owed for the surgery itself as well! Hopefully we will be better soon!

Thanks! I won't be lifting anything, I think I did too much today..so maybe it will be better tomorrow! I wish the healing process was quicker!!

Mine is pretty constant with big movements, walking and such, it also gets worse after being still for long periods of time. If I am sitting or laying down then the pain is very minimal until it's time to get up.

Will your doctor not call in more pain meds? Mine offered but I've barely touched the ones given to me after surgery so I said no.

I really hope it eases up over the next week and a half because when I return to work it will take my all to concentrate on the job and trying to get in what little liquids and food that I can handle.

I'll cross fingers that we're both better soon! :)

I knew about this from pre op consults and was prepared for it, even had some pain from that largest incision but it all pretty much stopped. My concern is after being pretty much pain free to have it all start again, that has been somewhat terrifying.

I haven't even asked for more pain meds, mainly because I haven't needed them anymore..until now. Which is so frustrating. I'm going to give myself time to heal, but it still sucks! I return to work next week, and I'm praying this will magically go away! Lol

I woke up this morning with a little less pain, so we will see how it goes! I'm not doing any lifting or cleaning today so maybe that will help!

My fingers will be crossed for us, too!! :)

Yes! That is exactly how mine is, it stings for a few seconds and comes back on and off. Usually when this pain is bothering me, it lasts a whole day and is on and off throughout that day. But some days are ok, like todays it only bothered me a few times, for a few seconds at a time.

Me too! I was sleeved on July 16th, and it's an on and off sharp pain. Inside to the left of my belly button. It's not terrible, but not pleasant.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
