Hi,

Ever since I lost my last baby, Summer Rayne, at 23 weeks pregnant back in 2004, I have been wanting another baby. I have two daughters, 19 and 18, and I have lost 3 babies. 8 years and not one pregnancy test has come up positive, until tonight. My DH and I are thrilled, but also scared to death. I had an injury to my neck 2 1/2 years ago and I have been on Oxycontin for the past year and a half. Not to mention, I only had my sleeve 8 months ago. I actually had to sign an agreement with my bariatric doctor saying I wouldn't get pregnant for 2 years. What happens now?? So many questions and so many nerves on edge. Can anyone help? Oh, not to mention that I will be 40 in November and I am already considered high risk from my past losses.

First, congratulations! The emotional roller coaster you've been on has to be pretty spectacular, so congratulations on still being coherent. If I were you, I'd get myself to a high-risk obstetrician asap. The fact of having signed something is now secondary to reality. All sorts of factors are in play here, and the best thing you can do for your peace of mind is confirm the pregnancy, be upfront with whomever you see, and find someone in your area with a specialty in chronic pain, weaning off pain meds and still having a life.

In the meantime, between now and all those appointments sure to happen, bask in the happiness of the possibilities without worrying about catastrophes. You can only do what you can do. The rest is out of your hands.

I think first and foremost you should talk to your doctors and let them know. You may need to stop/change your medications if any of them are unsafe for the baby. My surgeon said it's possible to carry a baby to term soon after being sleeved, though not advisable. He also said that two years or more for having a baby would be the best idea. I wish I had better advice, but I definitely think you should fess up to your surgeon. I hope things work out for you.

Yes, get in to a high risk OB (MFM or perinatologist) because of your history and your current medical concerns.

It's not the ideal time to get pregnant, no, but there's never a perfect time! Embrace this surprise blessing and do everything you can to take care of yourself and your baby.

As for the bariatric surgeon, he's not part of your OB care team. I'm sure he'd be disappointed but the reality is that you're not the first to experience increased fertility as you lose weight. It happens. The most important thing is to be 100% up front with your OB care team about what meds you're on, how often you take them, any health concerns and yes, your sleeve. Get an appointment ASAP - if they try to push you off explain a bit of the situation so they know how serious your situation is.

Docs have you sign those agreements to cover their backsides! In this world of lawsuits anything involving pregnancy is at high risk for litigation. Their malpractice insurance requires such practice! You have a sleeve which has little to no issues with malabsorption and vitamin deficiancy. You control what goes in your mouth. See your ob/gyn and call your NUT. asap to determine your daily protien and calorie intake. Weightloss is not your goal right now, however you can continue to get healthy for you and the baby at the same time! If you were a by-pass patient if would be different. I am sure you are at a much healthier state right now than you were before your surgery. Hop on a prenatal vitamin with folic acid as soon you can! However, if you have been doing your protien shakes etc... as you should have you have given baby a good start! No worries sweetie, healthy babies are born into much worse situations than this! By the way congratulations! Stop stressing! Thanks to your sleeve and you getting healthy it made it easier for you to become pregnant! Lucky you will have your weightloss tool already in place to take off the baby weight. If you follow your NUT's advice you may not have much baby weight to lose! Keep us posted! you are going to have to stop those meds and have ob/gyn help you come up with a new option for pain control. You may discover that you are more pain tolerant during this than you once thought. Best wishes!

It has been a long time since I have been pregnant and I am afraid to close my eyes and wake up to find that it was all a dream. I do see a pain specialist and I have an appointment with him on the 7th. I am also on Cymbalta, so that will need to be discussed with my PCP as well. Those are the 2 I am worried about. I have been taking 2 multivitamins for women since I had my surgery. Plus the calcium, b12, and D. I am guessing a NUT means a nutritionist? I have been seeing my OB/GYN for the past 20 years and he is very aware of my high risk situation. I am healthier now than I have ever been in my adult life. I am sure they will get my in right away, once the office opens on Monday. This is the down side of finding out it is positive on a Friday night!

My oldest daughter birthed this beautiful little doll you see in my profile back in January while on seizure meds. We new there was an increased risk with cleft palate, but that was a risk we all were willing to take for her to be able to have a child. As you see she is healthy and has even been above percentile in reaching milestones. You have the main appts in progress so continued good luck to you. Don't know if you are a religious person,but I am sure you wouldn't mind some prayers going up! Gotcha covered!

Talk to a high risk OB before stopping any meds. Stopping either the Cymbalta or Oxy suddenly could actually be dangerous for you and the baby. Many women take opiate pain meds throughout pregnancy if absolutely needed. The baby will just have to be monitored for a few days. Congrats!
