Hey I have a question before my surgery I've tried "diet" stuff like the no sugar added, things with artificial sweetener, my Dad is diabetic and they've always had sugar free everything in the house since i was a kid and I've tried to like it the diet drinks, sugar free Desserts, etc. I always couldnt bear the taste. After my surgery I was allowed to have sugar free ice pops and diet snapple so I figured I'd give it a shot and they tasted so sweet to me and I wasnt ready for the sweetness so I didnt have much. Well now I'm on to solid foods well somewhat solid and went and got some yogurt with artificial sweeteners because they are the only ones with low enough calories....and I LOVE IT!!! I've now tried different things "diet" or no sugar added and I can't even tell they are sweetened with aspartame I feel like my taste buds have totally changed. I mean it's a good thing but has that happened to anyone else. I was worried before my surgery I wouldnt be able to enjoy my new diet but I really like the taste and it's much better for me. :clap2:

Thanks for the advice about dinners. I'll try your ideas.

It's extremely reassuring to know I'm not the only one who's hit a plateau. I did drop a pound this morning from yesterday morning. I walked 2.51 miles yesterday, and really focused on getting my Protein and Water. I'll try that again today. I don't think I've ever walked 2.5 miles in a day in many years!!

DH is wonderful. Since I've asked him to help make sure I walk, he's devoted a lot of effort to planning interesting walks. We walked around a local reservoir yesterday, and he was quite willing to go at my pace, and rest when I wanted to. He told me all the years when I was too fat to walk, he really missed walking with me. We used to walk and hike when we were dating and it was one of the losses for him of me gaining weight. He's been just wonderful through this whole process. It's really true that we are not the only ones affected by obesity.

Although I'm at a weight loss plateau, my clothes are suddenly too big. I've been able to 'shop in my closet' and can wear things that I bought too tight (dumb, I know) and have been hanging there for years with tags still on. And my 19 year old son was standing on the driveway when I got out of the car and he said "Hey, is that my thin mom?"

There were two people out on the path who were roller blading -- one an older man, who looked winded toward the end, and a younger woman with a great figure. She just raced around the path 6 or 8 times in the time it took us to circle it once. Maybe someday I'll be able to do that...

Although anyone who thinks surgery is the 'easy way' to lose weight is nuts, this was SO worth it.

Although anyone who thinks surgery is the 'easy way' to lose weight is nuts, this was SO worth it.

I have come to realize that anyone who thinks surgery is the "easy way" doesn't understand the demons, urges and desires we fight.

I myself, didn't truly, truly understand it until 1 or 2 days after my surgery, when my mind was telling me I could eat anything I wanted and was urging me to do so with ludicrous cravings.

I fought back, it was a hard battle and honestly, it may not be over yet. The good thing is, I recognize it now, where as before, I didn't understand what I was up against.

LOL. I love you guys. I pretty much come here read this thread, update my journal and log off. And I really love it.

I was reading someone's journal, and the strangest thing was said. "Four people got banned from LBT" today. I was so clueless that any such hostility even existed on this board. I read a few "good bye" posts and I don't really care to go on.

You guys are great, honestly I have no idea what anyone would have to fight about on these forums anyway. Meh.

/hugs to the ABC!

I don't have to for four more days, but I feel like I could go back to work tomorrow if I HAD to.

Faybie: Although you feel you could go back to work if you HAD to, make sure you rest ALOT over the next four days. I was feeling great the day before I went back to work, but when I returned to work (desk job), I was exhaused by 2:00 and had to come home. I have now been back to work for a week and a half, but am still pretty exhausted by the end of the day. Take it easy and remember your body is still healing.

Hi guys,

I'm post surgery day 3 and have a couple of questions.

1)Whenever I eat (yogurt today) or drink the Isopure I get this wierd thing in my esophagus, kinda like spasms trying to get the food to go down. Does anyone else get that?

2) Is everyone doing chewable Vitamins? I was told I could do the flintstones chewables or crush my regular Vitamins, but either way I get nauseous.

3) How long does it take for the swelling to go down? My stomach is pretty swollen, like a 6 or 7 month pregnant belly....

Connie

1) I was unable to eat/drink anything for the first two weeks that was cold. Everything had to be room temperature. This was really weird for me, because I always liked COLD drinks.

2) I did Centrum liquid for the first two weeks and I am now doing Centrum Chewables. I figure they are adult strenth so I will be sure to get all the "adult" stuff I need.

3) I am almost three weeks out and still have a little bloating. I don't think it's necessarily swelling, but definately bloating.

Hope this helps.

Hey all, 2 days after surgery I'm feeling really good - just sleepy. I have a couple of questions.

1)My husband noted that some of my liquids weren't technically clear - like beef broth and I bought a drink that iIthought was clear but iht was opaque (I only had a few oz). It's ok, right?

2) Do you guys feel sort of a burpy sensation but nothing comes to the surface. I get it whether I've been eating or not. Like a gas rising in my chest -- and I have to take a breath to make it pass - but no burp payoff? sound right?

3) Sticky surgical glue removal and/or iodine removal ideas? Not that I'm hanging out in a bikini, but my shirt sticks to me.

So far I can sip about 1/2 cup of liquid, a little more and I feel that tightness. I am hungry but not ravenous. My stomach has been growling most of the day. I guess this is all normal. I can't belive it's done! I'm so glad I took this step!

I'm with you 100% faybie!!! I'm so thankful to have the ABC for support. I can't imagine fighting with anyone here. We're all in the same boat, we're all going to make mistakes and we all need to know it's okay. That's all that matters. :biggrin1:

How people end up fighting on a SUPPORT Board confuses the heck out of me.:phanvan

Pelorojo, sounds like you're doing fine. That burping sensation is gas, nothing to worry about. As for the surgical glue, mine started just flaking off on its own, so I really don't have any suggestions.

PeloRojo: Sounds like you are doing great!

1) I was on Clear Liquids for two weeks and told by my surgeon that I could have broth. You technically can't see through it, but there is nothing in it to make it anything but clear.

2) I had a burpy sensation, and still to, but everytime comes a BIG burp!

3) I used rubbing alcohol to get the iodine off. I had to get my husband to help and it took a little rubbing. A few days later I was having a lot of sticky left from bandaids and I used "GooGone" it's a citrus based goo removal. It might work great for the iodine too. You can usually find it at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc.

1. I never did just Clear Liquids - Dr. Spivak advised drinking beef or chicken broth, Crystal light, Isopure, and cream Soups which I started the day after surgery.

2. I definitely burped for about 2 weeks - I thought I might be drinking too fast but it happened even when I drank very slowly. It passed off eventually.

3. The sticky glue was on my skin for at least a week after I took the steristrips off. It just would not come off before then. Then one day in the shower I rubbed and it came right off on my washcloth. For the betadine color, I used alcohol to remove that but was very careful around the incisions.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
