Thanks for the welcome Margie. I have been doing more and more reading. I'm nervous, I'm excited and every emotion in between.

Hello all,

I just got the call from BIDMC and I am seeing Dr. Schneider on 9/27. :whoo: I could have gotten in to see him on 9/20, but I have an all day class that day.

I'm very excited! I'm this much closer to a surgery date.

Hi Sherry--you are my INSPIRATION, so don't be discouraged. You're past the road block now.

Thanks for asking about the infection--as you know I was in hosp for five days and had to return to see Dr Jones the following week. Tests showed I was still battling an infection, so I was on ANOTHER 10 days of antibiodics. YUK!

SInce then I have recovered completely and even had a first fill. Dealing with learning what and how I can eat. I'm still down only 19lbs from first weigh-in, but weight will start coming off again, I hope!

Has anyone else dealt with a much lowered eenergy level? Still need a nap most days.

As you said, "It's baby steps . . ."

Congrats Marg!

Lorna - You are so sweet. Thank you for the encouragement. Are you getting enough Protein? Enough Iron? If you're not it may be why you're tired. Also, if you're not taking in enough calories you not only will be tired but you won't lose weight either because you're body will think it's starving. What did the nutrionist say?

Gosh I can't wait for my October appointment. I need fill put back in....I don't want to gain more weight. It's kinda neat that I can go on my vacation next week and not worry about getting stuck but when i get back it's back to the grind and making better food choices for sure!

Hope everyone is doing well.

Good evening all. My name is Liz and I am beginning my journey. I had my psych eval and first meeting with the NP at St. Elizabeth's. My BMI is (only??) 35 but I have at least one co-morbidity so I am hoping for approval from BCBS after I meet with surgeon in November. I am scheduled for a ton of preop tests in October. Does anyone have experience at St. E's??

Hi, I'm Jude and I am pre-band status altho I got my surgery date last week of Oct. 15th. My surgeon is Dr. Edward Mun at Faulkner Hospital in JP.

I have been on a mostly liquid slim-fast diet for over 5 weeks now and have lost 13 lbs. Dr. Mun is very insistant on a non-fatty liver before the procedure. My BMI is 60 (or was) my weight was 334. All my presurgery work up has been done.

I am hoping to travel to WY about 12 days after surgery...any opinions about that from you all?

Hollandsmom, I don't know your doctor or the program at St. E's, but it's an excellent hospital. It's where my PCP is affiliated with. I had a surgery there and they took good care of me :)

Jdot - unsure about your vaca 12 days after surgery. I haven't had my lap band sx yet, but I have had gallbladder surgery and I'm guessing that the recovery period is about the same. You should be ok, but it really depends on how you come out of the anesthesia. The surgery itself didn't bother me, it was recovering from anesthesia.

Good luck to both of you.

Jude:

I wouldn't recommend travelling 12 days after surgery because I had little energy for the first few weeks. In addition, your doctor may not want you to travel. You may still have stitches or staples at 12 days out. Good luck.

Are you doing the driving on this trip? Just curious because my doc didn't recommend us driving for at least 2 weeks. I have to say I was pretty sore in one particular spot for at least a month and that spot hurt when I leaned forward to look before turning etc in my car. Otherwise I was ok.

I have heard of people flying out of Mexico and back home days after surgery though and also of some driving themselves home over 100 miles. Check around this website it's all over the place. Best bet is to check with your own surgeon to be safe ;)

Congrats on your date and good luck!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
