Will I Ever Enjoy Eating Again?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am one week post op now and I realize that it is still early out; however, I cannot imagine right now eating ever being comfortable, or seeming natural. Do you remember this feeling? Does it go away? Is eating comfortable and does it seem natural now?

Thanks,

M

Welcome to the losers bench! What you're feeling is totally normal, and it goes away. Eventually you will enjoy eating again. Just be patient and remember that you did this for all the right reasons, it just going to take time.

Nope. Eating is miserable. I get kinda depressed because I can't sit and enjoy dinner or whatever. But I've learned to enjoy my family time

When did you have your surgery if you don't mind me asking?

Well, I don't want to be a kill-joy, but for me the answer is no. I am over four months out and I do not enjoy eating at all. It is a task that has to be done to stay alive and that is it. I am never hungry and do not enjoy the taste of anything that I used to. My results cannot predict yours though. Everyone is different. And you know what, I may be different in another month. You evolve greatly from day to day, week to week after the sleeve. It is a road of a lot of twists and turns and surprises. The main thing is to have patience; something that is not a great virtue of mine. If I want to try something, I do it. It may make me throw up, but hey, if it does I'll be fine in a minute and I don't have to eat any more of it. I can leave it off for awhile and try it again in a couple of weeks. It's all trial and error. I have learned what things fill me up faster, what gives me heartburn and what swells and sits like a rock in my chest. I am trying to learn other things to enjoy; eating out was always our weekly highlight. Now, I do not enjoy it at all. I told my husband that I was going to have to learn how to shop (something I have never done). He is going to have to start giving me my saved food money to buy new clothes. I promised that I would spend some on some nice night clothes, so at least we could enjoy some good dessert together...LOL  Best Wishes!!

If I'm careful, eating is more of a pleasure now than it was before surgery! Starting over again from the ground level, eating only the simplest, blandest foods has made eating diced peach a revelation! Focus on the tastes on your tongue, and dont lament the lack of quantity.

I feel like I'm no longer pressured to eat more than I care to eat just to clean my plate. I can be very selective about what foods I want, what tastes I want to experience, and a little goes a long way.

I'm not saying that everyone gets to that place, but I'm only 3 weeks post-op and I love the taste of my food more than I ever did. You just have to have a little more time to "learn your sleeve". You'll be back to loving your food again.

Focus on taste, not on quantity, and you'll be SO happy!

I'm 2 months post op. There are some days I feel "normal"order something( smart chioice of course) eat a few bites and realize, Leave it to Sleever is working great!! I do enjoy my small little portion! Then there are days( like this whole week so far) I don't feel like eating food at all.

I have just been sticking to my trusty EAS shakes! But yes, you will enjoy food again, but in small doses!!

I am two years out and do not enjoy food, eating out etc. what my stomach will tolerate differs from day to day. I throw up a lot and do not like the taste of many foods I used to love. I don't regret the surgery but I do get depressed sometimes that I can not eat like a normal person

I hope it all works out for you

best of luck

I'm almost year out & I view eating as a necessary evil. I do not enjoy it, I never eat with the family or waste my time & money going out to eat but don't mistake this as me being miserable or regretting my sleeve because neither is true.

Maybe I'm going to be the odd one out here but I still love food. I'm 10 weeks. Not at first of course because how exciting can chicken broth be. I enjoy the little i get and those few bites are nice. Im excited i dont eat like a truckdriver anymore. Im one happy camper with a sugar free fudgesicle too!!!

Well, I would say yes but it seems I'm the minority. Drinking liquids got easier for me once I realized that if it wasn't ice cold it wasn't going down.

I'm 6 weeks out and I am enjoying food again. It's not a lot of food and if you don't get caught up in the head game that you have finish everything on your plate then you can actually enjoy the tastes of each food more. I had a very rough start with some complications. I felt just like you wondering would I ever enjoy food again. I think I am in the majority when I say it gets better and easier every week. Some things work, some don't. Some days i dont feel hungry at all and forget to eat when i am supposed to and some days i actually feel hungry. Its nice to satisfy that hunger with just a yogurt, or one slice of deli meat and chees rolled up. I enjoy watching the scale go down and inches melt away. I know I will never get to gorge myself with an entire plate of food again, but I don't miss it. This was an opportunity for a second chance and I have no regrets.

I'm about 3 1/2 months out and I don't enjoy eating yet. It seems that I always get full with just a few bites and just end up sitting at the table awkwardly while everyone else still eats. And my tummy also decides what will go down ok that day...ugh, and sometime I forget to eat and that's not good either. I'm hopeful that this will change one day :)

keepin it real ;)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
