Why? I'm a bit over a month out. I'm taking an acid blocker (Prevacid) twice daily. I'm drinking 6-7 cups crystal light and 11-22 ozs of Protein shakes. So it seems like it shouldn't be acid or thirst.

I am eating about 1/4 cup three times daily, something like an egg, or baked chicken, or salmon. No room for any more food at mealtimes - I'm eating and feel fine, take a break, eat the next bite and realize I'm going to be sick if I eat any more. But i usually get in close to 1/4 cup. I have one to two Protein Shakes daily, and then a small snack like a baby bell light cheese if I don't have a Protein shake between meals. I'm getting 500-700 calories per day. I don't have diet restrictions per my surgeon at this point, but I do stick to pretty basic foods.

I'm not dreaming about food I want to eat, but in between meals I get so hungry I feel ill. I'm not sure how to get in my Water, Protein drinks, meals, avoid grazing, and (preferably) avoid this uncomfortable hunger.

Any ideas?

I am in the same place, so I would like to hear suggestions.

I'm hearing a lot of folks need a little snack in-between meals. We just don't have the capacity to do only 3 meals a day.

I wonder about your calorie intake. MY doc wants me at about 800-1,000 per day when all is said and done. I hear others saying 600-800 and yet others saying 1,000-1,200. Has your doc given you and idea of what he wants you to shoot for?

Mine has also given me Protein levels to shoot for as well.

I wonder if it would help to do food instead of a shake for you?

I have no clue. Just throwing things out there! You might have to play with different calorie levels and shakes vs. food for Snacks and such to find a good balance for yourself.

Best wishes!!!

I'm 14 weeks out today, by no means a veteran...but I'll take a stab at this one for you...

I've lost 70 lbs and I've never followed a "set" meal schedule. My surgeon advised me to listen to my sleeve: eat when I'm hungry, and that's exactly what I do. I eat 4-6 VERY small meals a day and my sleeve has gotten me on a regular daily schedule. At 8 weeks, my Doc told me I could ditch the Protein shakes for Protein Bars...they taste way better & I hate shakes anyway. When my loss stalled, he advised me to up my daily calories from 700/800 to 1000...and waddya know? The scale started zooming again. I stick to the basics & I don't waste my time on foods/snacks w/poor nutritional value--except for pork rinds! They have replaced chocolate & dessert in my life! Everyone is unique, so there is no magic formula, but I do believe listening to your body is a great key to success.

I'm really interested in the calorie issue - my doctor has told me I should be getting 1000 calories daily by now. It sounds insane to me - how the heck is that going to happen! I would have to start consuming some very calorie dense food, I'm not even sure what that would be given my Protein needs and that I eat less than a cup of food per day. His idea was to start drinking FOUR protein shakes a day. That didn't work at all - my sleeve would not accept the volume, even spread through the day. I take in two, but there is no way I can get down four. Also, I hear such conflicting reports from other people, as you said, but it seems that folks early in the weight loss process are aiming for 600-800. It is pretty confusing for me too. I find it particularly difficult because I don't feel very confident in what my doctor tells me.

I'm only 2 weeks out and my body just can't tolerate the Protein Shakes I think because of the milk content, it's making me feel sick. I am having 5-6 tiny meals a day plus juice or Water. I eat like a baby. Like Terrylynn, I eat when I'm hungry. I don't count calories since the amounts of food I am eating a so small and low in fat anyway. I would suggest you experiment, that is what my surgeon here in Australia suggested and it is working well for me - remember we are all different and what works for one person may not work for you.

I eat pretty basic stuff too but I eat every 3 - 4 hours. I generally get hunger often and eat smaller meals. I'm getting in about 1200 calories a day.

It IS so confusing! I think what it all boils down to is playing w/in the "system" so to speak, to find the best fit for you and see where that takes you. It may work or not. Or works for a bit, then you've got to change it up again.

If you are losing, meeting your protein goals and otherwise feel good, then you're probably doing alright.

If, on the other hand, something isn't working, then you have to find a different way of doing things.

All of us are so different, what works for one of us, may not work for another, even if that person swears by it! Kinda like our tastes in protein! LOL!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
