I received a few samplers of Protein powders today and I got this one from unjury that supposedly tastes like chicken Soup. I thought this might be good to try for a nice replacement of broth, do like a combo of Protein broth flavor thing.

So I'm looking at the nutrition facts and for this packet that is 1 serving size it has 780mg of sodium, 30%. Isn't that a lot of sodium?? Will that be bad to have so much salt like that particularly post-op when I'm drinking this the 3-4 weeks or no?

So confused here.

Also, what exactly is a post-op liquid diet like. How many protein packets do you typically use in 1 day, is it based upon how much protein you need to add up to? It's about 64 grams a day, right? Or am I wrong? So confused here. I was hoping to get in sort of a practice round but I don't see where I could locate any kind of sample routine just to test what it's like ahead of time.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't had surgery yet either. I, as well, got the Unjury chicken broth. I figure 30% sodium isn't sooo bad when the "sweeter" Proteins will hardly contain ANY. I wanted one salty "normal" tasting food to offset the sweet. I tried one and it was really good. Did not have that Protein taste at all! I also got the Isopure 50g protein packets not the greatest taste, but figure if i sip on it throughout the day, with my Water, etc., then thats 70g protein in 2 products. Also got unjury's non flavored to put into homemade liquid/full liquids. Anyway, that's my uninformed, unsurgical opinion!

I guess that is true, it just seemed particularly high for a salt content. I know that sodium can have a hand in assisting Water retention so I would be concerned about intaking that much just from one packet let alone however many you generally would have in 1 days worth.

I also have a 2nd question. On these Bariatric Advantage brand packets that I have some samples of, it seems their nutrition facts is a little weird on serving size. It says Serving Size: 1 packet (43g), Serving per Container: 24, Amount per Serving: Calories: 150

Are they saying that 1 packet has 150 calories, or 24 x 150??? That's 3,600 calories! That would be insane! It's confusing because it says serving size and amount of servings per container. Maybe they are just saying that their containers have 24 servings that you purchase generally but this is only a sample of? So confused.

Hi ,that is high sodium ,my nut advised against it but I use the injury chicken its a nice change of pace especially in liquid phase ,be mindful of sodium intake and u should be ok. It helps me to use" my fitness pal "app as you journal your foods it keeps a tally of where you are for the day Nutritionally ie. sodium , Protein , fats ...ect

Sounds like they are copying from their canister!? If you could pull up their website and view their nutrition facts, that would probably work.

My NUT told me that unjury's chicken broth is ok once a day.We actually need sodium during our liquid phase. One bottle of gatorade has 440mg of sodium. It helps with dehydration. She said too much sodium is a problem once we're back to solid food.

As far as the packaging... They're saying one packet is 150 calories.

I considered trying the Unjury broth flavor but I've decided just to make my own broth and add Protein to it on a per serving basis. Having done a liquid diet prep for gallbladder surgery, I found I didn't like the taste of commercial broth and I figure powdered won't be any better. I'll just throw a chicken, carrots, onions, garlic and a bay leaf in a pot with a bunch of Water. My family can eat the chicken and I'll strain the rest and portion it out in an ice cube tray. Pop one or two into a cup, microwave and then add the protein powder!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
