Did You Or Are You Keeping Your Sleeve A Secret?

Recommended Posts

I have told my mum, my children and my best friend. I haven't always been obese so I feel like a failure resorting to surgery. I have decided that I am going to tell people if they ask that I had a hernia repair (I had my gall bladder out a number of years ago). The people close to me have been really supportive of my decision. My surgery is a week and a half away so very close now and I am going to see the dietician of Monday to find out about the food aspect after I have had the surgery. This surgery is all about US so if you choose to tell or not to tell that is ok because really it is no one's beeswax!!

I told everyone I knew and still do if it comes up in conversation. I initially decided to tell for support bc my husband travels a lot and I just wasn't sure how it would go or if I'd need my friends to help at times with kids or anything during recovery period(none of that happened and I was walking a couple miles a day the first week;-) Now I still tell everyone but have realized it is for a different reason... the friend who casually and openly told me about her surgery 3 years ago literally changed my life. Had she not been so open and positive and telling me how easy it was and what a good decision it had been for her, I might have missed the boat! I still thank her for her honesty and openess while sitting outside at the picnic table with the whole group of kindergarden class Moms around regarding her surgery, She didn't have to blurt out to me that she had her stomach cut out three years ago( i thought she was one of the one with naturally great genetics!) She is adorable and cute and was 80 pounds heavier 3 years ago. So glad she was open about it! Even if a skinny friend tells an overweight cousin, friend, coworker whatever about the procedure-it's definitely a topic of conversation! it;s kind of like the whole group is on the journey now with me, really lifting me up with losses and encouraging me with those long weekly plateaus! It worked for me but each situation is different!

I finally told my mom, my hubby definitely knows, 3 close friends, and a cousin. I choose not to share the info with people. My in-laws are very judgmental and really don't care about me anyway. They just like to know things because they can cackle about it amongst themselves.

I've chosen to tell anyone who asks and I will not keep it a secret. People in general need to hear more about WLS---instead of keeping it a dark secret. Of course, there will will always be those who will judge--those people are the ignorant ones. Would you believe two friends I graduated with, who are doctors now, told me not to do the surgery because "it's not proven to be successful" and that "so many people's lives change for the worse afterwards". BTW, they both could use WLS. I didn't listen to them and made my own decision. It is such a personal decision--only each individual can make.

I originally was only going to tell my husband, mom and my supervisor at work. I completed all of my initial testing and Dr's visits without anyone else knowing. I finally told my co-workers (we work at the hospital where I am having surgery) because I knew they would find out anyway. They have been very supportive and told me if it worked well that maybe some of them would consider it. My husband told his mother and then she told his sister....my sister knows know too. I am not ashamed of having the surgery, I just wasn't wanting the whole world to know. But "KNOWING" that I will be successful, I really don't care anymore. By the way, I am less than a week out from having surgery! May 25th is the day!

I have only told a handful of people. Some girls from work know, of course my hubby he has been there work me at all my appointments and will be there for the surgery. My parents and sister know too I still haven't told my son, he is 10. I am not ashamed to tell anyone however I just want to wait until it's done. Everyone has their reasons one way or the other and there are always going to be those that support us and those that have something too say about it. We always have each other here on this wonderful site.

Def. sounds like my in-laws! I am 100% percent sure that no matter what I am not telling them. They have always talked about me because of weight, my husband is extremely physically fit, i am the polar opposite of him, but I have pcos and my body fat flares up over the sight of food! Anywho, my sister in law has gone as far as to say that she has a "phobia" agaisnt fat people. I just want to lose the weight and be like "BAM look at me now" lol. I mean I am still having to work hard, diet and excercise, I just needed some extra help. But no matter what, in there eyes i would be a loser who had to get surgery to lose weight and I would forever be talked about.

I hear you letsdothis. That's exactly what I plan to do, show up to a family function like BAM POW how you like me now. I'm so excited about improving my health and boosting my self-esteem. I have not always been overweight, I've gained weight after having my beautiful children. But, now it's time for momma to get her body back. And I'm READY!

I don't want my inlaws to know either. They are so judgmental against me. I only see them when I HAVE to. That being said, I haven't seen them since CHRISTMAS!!! I will see them tomorrow for my sons high school graduation, then surgery in August for me! Then hopefully I wont see them again until this Christmas. Hopefully at 4 months post op by them I can be down at LEAST 40...enough to notice! And no, even THEN I won't tell them. They never wanted to include me in their life or get to know me...I'm over it, and they didn't deserve a good me, they sure don't deserve a better me!!!

My surgery is June 7th. I'd love it if we kept in touch as a support system. It seems like we all understand each other.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
