August Sleevers?! Where Ya's At?

Recommended Posts

My pre op diet started jan 17. I have a very strict diet. I have had to lose 10% ofmy weight to qualify for surgery.

My diet is 1 cup of foods 3 times a day. So 3 cups of food per day

Nothing fried, no eating out, no cheese, no bananas, no caffeine, only Water to drink. Can have 1 cup of skim milk per day.

I have to keep a food journal to be checked at my monthly weigh ins. If you gain any weight during this time you are put on probation, gain any more and it's game over.

WOW!!! so, you had a 6 month diet. Do you have to do a 1 or 2 weeks liquid diet or anything before your surgery besides the 6 month diet?? Congrats btw, you've done great!!!

Hey all :) Here's the latest list. I'm super excited that the time is flying by! I went yesterday and got a few comfy outfits since im going to the beach for my surgery. It's going to be hot. I'm having a party (a christmas in july' date=' surprise birthday party ) for my best friend whos birthday is on christmas. It's going to be 3 days before my pre op starts! I'm almost to that "month til pre op diet" mark :)

Hope everyone is doing well. Keep in touch after you start your pre op diet's and we can be eachothers support systems! Please take a minute and hit the little rating star at the top of the thread! I'd like as many other august sleevers to see this as possible.

Talk to you all soon :)

PS, what is YOUR pre op diet?

Mine is 2 weeks Protein shakes....and i believe sugar free Jello.

my friend is having it and said her doc said she can eat whatever but has to drink Protein Shakes too (that doesnt make sense to me . )

Another friend on here had it for 3 days (protein shakes)

and another person had shakes but could eat chicken and steak as well. His diet was basically the Atkins induction phase. [/quote']

hi skinnypants, thanks for keeping this list, its great to see who our fellow august sleevers are and their dates. Im in Australia & having my surgery with Dr Dolan. Also what is the rating star?? Im on my phone ...maybe a different layout?

I am new to this forum, just found it tonight. I will be sleeved by Dr. Alvarez on August 2, 2012.

Like Stormwarning, I just had peace about him and his skills when I researched him. That is great that you got to meet him all ready. I have talked with several of his patients and they all speak highly of him and his staff.

I am ready, SO ready!!

Hi AllNewMe, Sorry I am just now noticing your post. Meeting Dr. Alvarez was really a great experience. Too bad you and I won't be able to meet in person, but You will be resting comfortably in your own bed by the time I get there. I wish you all the best. Keep in touch.

My post op diet is full liquids for 10 days. Protein Shakes, tea, coffee, sports drinks, broth and some juices. 800-1000 calories per day. No foods allowed.

Does not sound like a lot of fun but I figure that it is prep work for the weeks to follow. Gotta make the choice to do the right thing and choose health over food. ( I am psyching myself up here) :)

We CAN do this!

Yes, it is too bad we won't be there at the same time. I am sure I will be glad to get home to my own bed and surroundings for the couple of weeks after surgery when things seem to be the worst.

I hope that you have a great surgery experience :) maybe we will meet one day at one of the yearly reunions that Dr. Alvarez hosts. I plan to try to make it to those. I will keep in touch.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! Welcome :) Have fun on your cruise and let me know your date and ill change it for ya! I know it's got to stink getting another surgery but just look at THIS as your final weight loss surgery. I feel so bad for all the lap banders out there. I know a couple that it hasn't been successful for. I'm so glad I found the sleeve. I hope it works out better for you!

Thanks! I did very good on the band at first, lost 50 lbs..until the complications of acid reflux, night coughs and pain. I wanted the sleeve back then but there were no surgeons in my area doing it yet.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
