What would you do?

I have an excess amount of annual leave (17 weeks) and need to take some.

I'm going to Hawaii in Aug/Sep for 2 weeks. Then 2 weeks after I return home, I want to go to Canada to surprise my cousin for his 30th Birthday.

Would you do it?

Only downside is, with one of my jobs, things are changing hand in June or July and any leave to be taken after this time is yet to be approved, as we don't know who will have the contract. (Which means, the pre-booked leave I have for Hawaii may not be approved, even though it has by the current employer).

I don't want to book anything yet (I can get flights for $1385) but would like to leave it until at least July or August when hopefully I can suss out if my cousin will be having a big party. Don't really want to go there for nothing, if you know what I mean, as I have things planned out as to how I will surprise him.

Nessa,I would have thought that meeting your cousin after a 45kg weight loss would be a great surprise!S/he may not recognise you!

On a different note I have a question for the general thread.I know that reflux after sleeving is a recognised side effect. Is having reflux *before* the surgery a contraindication to having the sleeve done?I stopped the anti-inflammatories 5 weeks ago when I got reflux and my kidney function started dropping (blood test last week shows my kidneys have recovered but the reflux persists).I am quite worried now that I won't be allowed to have the surgery if my tests are bad.

Yeah he may not even recognise me. I'm getting a lot of people who have to do a double take before they realise that it's me as they haven't seen me in a long time. He hasn't seen me in person since, um, 2010 I think, at 128ish or so kg.

I asked my surgeon this and he said if it happens it is manageable with PPI and usually it happens much less after the sleeve than before especially if you don't overeat.

Hi guys. I finally decided to join in on this thread. Have been following the thread for a while now. A lot of useful information I just love reading everybody stories.

My name is Sunette and I am from Perth WA.

Sleeved 22/3/2013 about 6 weeks out.

Pre-surgery weight 99.8kg

Surgery day 95.4kg

Post op weight loss 6.1kg

Currently 89.2kg

I have lost consistently for the 1st 3 weeks post op and nothing since then. Getting in my Protein and Water and walking a lot (I am a Registered Nurse) I am becoming discouraged and thinking is this it? What if my sleeve isn't working? I know almost everybody stall at 3 weeks but a 3 week stall in total is just getting me down.

Well that is my final crying in your ears.

Congrats to everybody weight loss so far. Honestly love this thread and support.

:)

Sunette

Thanks for this info mistysj. It is really reassuring to hear :) Dr Mosse booked me in to see the bariatric dietician on Friday to discuss preop diets so he can't be too concerned.I just wasn't expecting all the tests he ordered!

Hi Sunette!I have only just joined but I want to say that as a 'pre-sleever' with a 40.2 bmi I think that your 10 kg total loss in such a short time sounds great.Have your cm changed much in the last few weeks?

Welcome sess! I remember those days clearly! I remember crying to my husband and saying 'am I ever going to be able to eat again'. Please don't feel discouraged as it does get better every day. Try to eat some custard or yogurt or there is a thread on here that has purée recipes you could try. Just a little at a time - you would only be able to eat a few teaspoons at a time. Slowly the quantity will increase as time passes - just take your time and make sure you eat often. I was sleeved on the 18 July 2013 and I can eat one boiled egg and one slice of toast for Breakfast now. In the few weeks after the operation I couldn't ever imagine that I would ever be able to do that.

Another thing I found was that I felt very nauseated and figured out that I wasn't eating often enough so even now I eat very small meals (breakfast would be my biggest meal) but I eat often. You are doing the right thing by still getting in your Protein shakes and other fluids too.

You are not alone with what you are going through there are all of us with shoulders to cry on or give you a pat on the back!

Welcome Sunette. Please don't get discouraged - Being a nurse you probably know all this but I have also heard that a stall at 3 weeks is quite common - something to do with your body doing some huge adjustments to the reduction in calories. - from what my dietician told me is that we are putting our bodies into starvation mode so I guess this is your body going into 'famine' mode trying to hold onto your body weight stores - I think eventually it won't be able to hold much longer and you will see the weight come off - also if your are exercising it could be muscle that is keeping your weight at the same level. I am pretty sure you will see a change in the next few weeks and it will start to move as that is what I have heard from other people's stories.

I know you might think 'is this it' or 'it hasn't worked' but believe me - it does work and you will see the weight start to come off and then you will be amazed at your shrinking self. All the best - there is a great group on this thread so you will always have someone to share with and who has had a similar experience.

Hello everyone,

So happy to find other Australians let alone people from Brisbane. I live on the northside at Bray Park. But I had my surgery last Monday 23rd. From the day I sure my surgeon (dr rob finch) I was booked in and got my earlier super through and paid a day after my op.

I am now 5 days out and am really good, finding it hard to get in my 1500ml of liquid. But from my 2 week pre op shakes to today I have lost 11.5kgs. My dietitian didn't care what shakes I did so I had some celebrity slim and I did those for 2 weeks.

My starting weight was 155kgs, BMI of 48. I have had problems all my life with my weight and I feel scared, relief, stress, happy and every other emotion at this time.

To answer the people that are asking about early release of super. I don't have private health and wasn't going to join and then have to wait 12 months. So I got all my letters from my GP and specialist, plus all my quotes. Then had to send it to DHS for approval, that takes 10 days for the approval letter, then you send that letter to your fund and thru will release what DHS says. They will tell your super fund the net amount needed, but unfortunately they cannot release more that $10000.

My doctor does usually work out of a private hospital but does an immediate service once a month at RBWH. I was lucky to get on that. My price all up was $4500 for doctor, $1370 for anaethetist and hospital was $324 per night plus prothestics for the op. approx all up it cost me $8900.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions. Please ask if you need more info.

Would love to be able to catch up with anyone in Brisbane.

Hi Aussie Kelloff

I saw Dr Rob Finch last week, have private insurance and will be applying for my super to pay for the gap. Probably like many of you, I know and have been on many interesting diets over the years.

I'm looking at going in for my sleeve op in mid-June at Holy Spirit Chermside and taking two weeks off after it to rest and get used to my new lifestyle.

I would love to catch up with you before I got in to see how you are going and for any advice.

I'm actually very excited about the whole process and what changes will happen in the future.

Cheers, GC

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
