Lose And Loose Are Two Completely Different Words

Recommended Posts

Another one I've run across on here and another site I visit is people saying they are "6 (or whatever) days post off." What they obviously mean is post op. I'm in the medical field and this drives me nuts! lol

Well, I have to admit that ALOT of the time I mix these words up. But ALLOT of the time I don't. Sometimes I even forget the space in A LOT, but not very often. Because, as you know, they are two words. But ALOT of people don't remember that. ;)

You know, I thought about sharing this earlier, but I didn't... but I will.

At my surgery consult earlier this week there was (what I call) "one of those" ladies there, who think that because you're in a room, and she's in the room, there's some kind of automatic sisterhood. So I'm reading and she asks me what I'm reading, how is it, what's my favorite book (leave me alone), what surgery was I having, why that one, how much did I weigh (seriously?), was I married, was my husband fat, what did I think about RNY, what's my favorite food, do I think my surgeon is cute, etc.

She proceeds to tell me that she was thinking about getting, and I quote, "A vertical seive with a 32 degree boogie."

This is pretty funny... in fact, it's so funny I'm even laughing at the people who are SERIOUSLY misspelling words and not even realizing it - while joining in the fun. Yes, some are doing it purposefully, but... others are not.

I'm no English Major, I just happen to appreciate it.

Yeah I get pissed off also when people confuse the terms THERE, THEIR, and THEY'RE lol... It's comical to me

I just wanted to point out that I intentionally used the wrong form earlier in this thread! lol

And for me, it isn't the error that is annoying. It is the lack of caring and defensiveness (usually) when it is pointed out. A common retort is "Spelling nazi, you know what I meant", instead of "Oh, thanks!"

It is harder to know what someone is trying to say when the wrong words are being used. I get distracted when I am reading sometimes, between the wrong words and all these text abbreviations.

I know that I make mistakes when I am posting. I often have to go back and clarify what I am trying to say in a post. I try to make it easier for people to figure out what I am trying to convey, not leave them guessing. I am sure I fall short of the mark quite often. Also, I am guilty of using comma splices and incomplete sentences way too often in my online communications!

Bad habits everywhere! ;)

And don't get me started about "orientated," "conversating," and "irregardless." (Former English teacher.)

I have an aunt who can't "phanthom" things, and a dear departed friend used to use "inadvertently" incorrectly. I'd give anything to hear her say inadvertently again! :)

My worst habits are run-on sentences and ending sentences with a preposition so I'll write a whole post and then say things like and that's what I'm talking about. I should really learn to write better! ;)

I am loving this thread because I spent 20 years as a journalist and currently teach college English.

Other than this board, I mainly hang out in writer forums where people tend to write in complete sentences. One thing that really impressed me with this board is that so many posts use complete sentences and paragraphs.

I also love it that many put spaces in their post to break up big blocks of text making it easier to read. I think I even read a post from Amanda3.0 suggesting that strategy to someone, and I remember saying "thank you" in my head to her for doing that.

You don't have to look far at all to find these and other mistakes. It can be entertaining. There have been some very funny posts here. I try not to get hung up on the mistakes that others make when trying to communicate in an informal setting. I can't imagine my worst pet peeve being someone who uses the wrong word or spells it incorrectly. As long as I understand their meaning then I usually don't give it much thought. I try not to criticize because I know I have made some pretty stupid mistakes when my fingers go faster than my brain, and I don't want to be criticized.

Now, if we were in a class or you turned in copy for me to edit - that would be different. There would be proofreaders' marks all over this forum! :D

Ya know, us mathematicians wish you grammar experts would just realize that not everybody cares about grammar.

We don't ask you to ask to know how to calculate the volume of an object, nor the amount of restriction that will be produced by a given curvature in a path, or even summize the economic outlook based on current & past indicators.

So :P nanny nanny boo boo to you too.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
