Three Weeks Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

On February 20, 2012 I had my gastric sleeve surgery. I have to say, it was a little more than I had imagined, but I'm so glad I did it. The up side is that I haven't been sick at all since surgery. I did have trouble eating the Clear Liquids following surgery. I'm currently on a full liquid diet and have to say I'm ready for next week when I can acutally have some solid food (although it will be baby food consistency) My biggest issue has been "hunger pangs" which happen right after a meal. I actually found this site because I was wondering if these hunger pangs were normal. I'm glad to know that they are very normal and are probably just related to stomach acid. Another issue I'm currently having is getting in enough Water, but I'm slowly improving on this issue also. Currently I have lost 15 lbs. in three weeks. My daughter has started the same program and will be having the same surgery in about six months. My son is getting married in three weeks and I'm afraid to buy my dress for the wedding until closer to the date. I went shopping yesterday and was able to wear two sizes smaller than normal. I just couldn't make myself make the purchase until closer to the date. I attended my first support meeting this last week. This was an awesome meeting and provided me some more insite into what to expect. I plan to make this a successful venture and I know that I can do it.

I also was sleeved on 2/20/12. I've lost 30 lbs & I started on mushies, per my Dr already. At first, I couldn't tolerate anything cold hitting my pouch, so Protein Shakes were a no go. I had to force myself to drink room temp New Whey Protein Bullets (yuck), until last week when I could drink my beloved cold liquids again! It's been a roller coaster finding protein that actually tastes good, but I did-GNC 25 is great tasting & affordable! I'm so happy that I had this surgery!! :)

I've been taking Priloset since surgery, the doctor told me to take two pills instead of one, I decided to take one in the morning and one in the evening. Now my "hunger pains" are not as bad. I also started on my "pureed foods" this week...I'm still struggling with getting in enough Water, but I will continue to work on it. I'm feeling great and actually had pork chop (blended of course) tonight. My son-in-law grilled them for us tonight.

I was sleeved on 2/22. My doc told me to start on food. Take my time and listen to my body. I was very surprised. Thus far I have lost 35 pounds. Congrats everyone on our life changing adventure.

I am suppose to start on solids next week, although I have sampled a few bites here and there, chewed to mush consistency of course. So far everything has been ok. However, today I tried to eat some small bites of watermellon this afternoon...that was definitely not a good experience. I didn't throw up, but it just didn't set well with my stomach. I do think that part of is is because last summer I got sick after eating some watermelon and I think that todays experience may have been do to last summers event. I just know that I don't desire to eat any more watermelon. This is still a very interesting learning experience...This evening I was actually craving a grilled hamburger with some A-1 steak sauce. Maybe one night this week I will get to try it. I'm actually so ready for a salad, even though a few months ago I thought if I neve saw another salad the rest of my life it would be too soon. It's funny what the body craves at different times. This last week my weight lost has been at a stand still, but I went shopping for a dress for my son's wedding next Saturday and went down another size. This was very uplifting. This morning I pulled out a pair of dress pants for Church and was pleasantly surprised to realize that they were too big. I have started a stack of clothes to send to Goodwill and it's growing. Since I tend to be a hoarder, I have been able to go through my closet and find lots of clothes to wear, some with tags still on them. Oh, I also started walkng this last week. I'm ready to get on a regular schedule of exercise.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
