Dr. Kelly Drama, Coordinators, Etc.

Recommended Posts

My time is running out. I need to decide on a doctor now. I actually scheduled and paid deposit with Dr. Ortiz but now having 2nd thoughts. He did my lap band, wonderful experience, so just automatically thought he was the one for my revision.. Well I started receiving phone calls from coordinators because I sent for information on costs for other drs. just to compare prices. One coord. told me Dr. Ortiz was a great lapband dr but not much experience in vsg. She recommended Dr Garcia. They no longer recommend Dr. Kelly bc of some issues. Hmmm

Doing research, I am actually impressed with Dr. Kelly. Yes I know he had a death which concerns me. I called to get info on Dr Kelly. I had several numbers. The first call I got back was from Dr. Kelly himself. He assured my I would be in good hands. When I asked about all the drama, he stated that he didnt feel the coords were representing him well so he decided not to renew the contract with them. Now they are upset with him. After hanging up from him, I received a call from someone who still works with him (you know who im talking about, will not say her name), told her I was interested in Dr. kelly. She said she would book me with him but she recommended dr. Ponce de leon. Really pushed this dr. which I have not heard of, works out of INT hosp. But what about Dr. Kelly, he has great credentials. She stated he was a skilled surgeon but there were issues, regarding integrity. Dr. Kelly is $3,000 cheaper than Ortiz and has more experience with vsg. Dr. K is a member of FACS and ASMBS as is Dr. O. but im very concerned with all this drama, if there is more to it than disgruntled coords. I am a revision, so safety and experience is my #1 conceren.

I also saw a post where the person called all these hospitals and Dr. K is not allowed to operate there anymore but wouldnt state why. She was accused of being a coord for another dr. Geeez. Help!

All I know is my experience . I went with Dr. Kelly and he was awesome.. You can go right through him without a coordinator.

He is VERY skilled at the sleeve. I have not had one complication!!

I could be like a few of the others on here and say "What about that woman he killed!!!"

Wouldn't that bring you down hearing something like that. Fortunately its untrue but thats how some people are. Dr Kelly would be my next choice but I had already scheduled with another. I have read many threads and on a poll in my mind that I pieced together from reading I hear more good things about Kelly than any of the others

Have you looked at alverez, pompa or aceves? They also have very good reveiws. I was sleeved by Dr Kelly, and had no major issues, however the whole coordinator bs is stupid. You really shouldn't have to be worried about their drama while you're making such a huge life changng decision.

All of these doctors are exceptional doctors. The problem comes in when the doctor gets tired of the drama and stops using a coordinating service. Then they lie about him. Look at the actual true stats of a doctor. Its important to do so.

Not all coordinators are drama queens either. Some are very helpful and nice. I was fortunate to have that.

I can tell you that I researched every surgeon in Mexico thoroughly before making my decision. I didn't choose one over the other because of some 7th grade game of telephone that some jaded coordinators were playing.

Please don't consider whether or not a doctor chooses to work with a marketing company as a reason to trust or not trust that doctor.

Call and talk to the staff at the hospital if you want to know what's really going on.

I am not sure where you get your information about Dr Kelly but he did have a death. It was a patient that bleed to death as an artery was nicked during the surgery and was not discovered until too late.

I have not heard of many of the other doctors that have been mentioned on this blog. I personally had my lapband revision to the sleeve with Dr F Garcia in Tijuana. I also had a friend that used Dr Almanza and was very happy with him.

The choice is yours and not the coordinators. If you want to go with Dr Almanza or Dr Garcia there are doordinators out there that would be glad to schedule for you. If you need info for these coordinators I can provide contact info for you.

This is your life and your choice and you as well of the rest of us who have already had surgery made a choice and were comfortable with our choice. I for one do not have an regrets with my choice.

Actually, there has been a lot of talk about the "death" - and that it very well may not have happened as was told by "A lighter me" - irregardless, 1 death in a surgeon's career, while tragic for the family and the surgeon himself doesn't not make him a bad surgeon. One death does not erase hundreds and hundreds of great successful surgeries - especially when the patient's condition was unknown. There has been no medical report released to the public about the cause of death of this woman. For all I know, she had a pulmonary embolism and died from that days after surgery.

Dr. Kelly is a member of FACS - you don't get there by making mistakes.

I see someones got that shovel digging their own hole deeper. Retaliation is never justified. Better reread what you read or lay down and relax then read it again. I just stated they HAVE messy people on these boards that start mess and I just knew it was going to be brought up sooner or later but if you would read instead of jumping to a conclusion.

You read "killed" and never finished reading. Thats pitiful Andy

Like I stated earlier Kelly would have gotten my business if I wouldnt have already made all my plans. Now theres a Doctor in New Iberia in Louisiana that does it for $9800. Thats just a few more dollars

Dear Capt......I got none of my information from a coordinator as you state. I asked 2 different coordinator and was told by both that they could not comment. SO please do not lecture me about what I know and who told me.

As I said I do not care who you choose for your surgeon but ultimately the choice is the patients.

Oh and I was not the one who used the word "killed" in my posts.

Maybe you need to re-read.

I booked thru Dr Kelly personally. My surgery was 12-28-11. No problems or complications. I had a wonderful experience. He is a great and caring doctor. I cannot speak for the other doctors, but Dr Kelly was wonderful.

And if you have a question for a surgeon that you are considering you can talk with that doctor on the phone.....and you can also ask the doctor that questions. If he refuses to answer to your satisfaction then I would look elsewhere.

Oh and Capt I do not want to get into a back and forth with you so I will not respond to this post again. Just remember that everyone is here for one reason and you are not the "Captain" of all of us.

Can I ask where you got your information about a "nicked artery"?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
