Has anyone else developed a lactose intolerance?

I'm ok with cottage cheese, yogurt, etc but a sip of skim milk and the gas is so horrible that I'm afraid I might bust!

I am with you...I stay away from all dairy. Switched to soy milk and don't eat cheese anymore. The gas is not worth it.

I had problems with milk before surgery. However all other dairy was OK. Now I am not able to eat yoghurt or ice cream, so far thankfully cheese is still OK.

The surgery just seems to have extended the issue from pre-surgery for me.

I developed lactose intolerance following surgery. I can tolerate yogurt, whey Protein, and firm cheese but not milk, soft cheese, or ice cream. I'm going to try again though because I've read that many people develop lactose intolerance, but it fades after a few months. I'm pretty used to soy milk now though!

Oh yeah. I had minor issues prior to surgery, especially when pregnant. I would stick to Lactaid and I'd be fine.

Post op all milk is a no-no. I've said sad farewells to soft cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, sour cream, etc. I can handle VERY small amounts of say, light cream in my coffee, or eat one cheese ravioli. Anything else makes me sick. I can eat hard cheeses but unfortunately cannot find vegetarian versions of them here in Bishkek so that does me no good!

I drink a lactose free Protein shake and so long as I mix it with soy milk or coffee I'm fine.

I think Tiffy had an issue, too. Basically find ways to work around it. It's hard but you can do it, especially stateside with lots of options like soy yogurt, coconut milk, coconut ice cream, Tofutti products!

I have to make my own soy milk here (I actually like it better than the packaged stuff but it's not fortified) and my own tofu, but other than that I'm on a pretty limited diet out here in the wilderness.

Edited to add: I can use goat milk in cooking, though, and I make a mean chevre from it, so try that if you're really hankering for cheese. Goat milk still has lactose but something about the amount of fat makes it easier to digest. I still have to stick to small portions to avoid issues but it's something!

Some cheeses are naturally lactose free. Cabot brand & others. You can enjoy cheese again!

I was really lactose intolerant after surgery for a long time. I'm at 2 1/2 years out now and I can finally drink milk again. I am not really sure when it even changed. I know for the past few months I would only have sips of milk because I was afraid to try more. The past few weeks though, I've had more than that without problems. So it seems like it's going away.

I wasn't lactose intolerant before surgery.

Thanks for the advice. I have cut out the milk products and can see a huge difference. Or feel should I say...

I have experienced this as well. Mine seems to be different from the experiences of the other posters to this discussion. I can have everything but milk. I don't get gassy, I get (Here comes the TMI...) explosive diarreha. It is really urgent too. Not fun. Prior to surgery, I could and often did drink up to a half gallon of skim milk a day because I really don't care for Water. Now, a single 1/2 cup is all it takes to trigger the intollerance. At least I know what to do if I get stopped up, huh?

No such thing as TMI to me.

It's only the milk that does it to me. Even if it's just the little bit I add to coffee. The worst part is that it's uncontrolable. I do not want to be known as the woman that passed gas at work.

Dairy was my mine source of Protein because chicken and turkey aren't sitting so well. I read about people eating just about everything at 8 weeks and I want to gag thinking about it.

Have you tried Lactaid brand milk? It is lactose free. They just came out with a yogurt as well, but I will ask my dietician her opinion, because it has half the protein than Greek yogurt. Walmart and lots of other places carry them. Like I mentioned before there are some cheeses that are naturally lactose free. Cabot brand is one example. Best wishes finding things you like! I am on the hunt myself.
