Pain when eating. What are your intolerances?

Recommended Posts

I have been sleeved since May 2009 and frequently have pain when I eat (been this way since the surgery). I have had every imaginable test and nothing is wrong so I am wondering if there's something I'm eating that's causing the pain and I just haven't cracked the code yet. I DO know eeven a bite of soft bread causes me pain, but crackers do not. I can eat a nice size salad without any pain at all so its not an issue of eating too much oor not chewing well enough. But sometimes even when I don't eat bread I'll have pain that starts anywhere from during the meal to an hour afterward.

Could some of you please give me some ideas of other things to consider about my diet? I can't live the rest of my life in pain. Thank you for your help.

In case you haven't yet, check with your doctor. I think you should be 100% sure there isn't an issue with your sleeve.

I'm 16 months out and I still get pain if I eat the following foods, even if it's just two or three bites:

Flour tortillas

bread - hearty bread like a dinner roll or a bagel

Rice

Any amount of Pasta or any shape or size - three or four bites and I'm in pain

So clearly, heavy carbs freak my sleeve out! I think they just get bigger and heavier in my tummy and it aches, so I avoid these foods as much as possible.

I'm also completely unable to eat dairy unless it's a hard cheese, but this is a different type of stomach/intestinal pain and doesn't seem to be what you're talking about.

Get checked out. Seriously - get an allergy test and an upper GI if you can afford it or your insurance will cover it, just to be sure there isn't a real problem.

Edited to add: When I say "pain" I do not mean rolling around on the floor in agony. I mean discomfort, a stretched and uncomfortably full feeling and once in a while a sharper pain directly where my sleeve is located. Enough to make me not do things that hurt, but not serious enough to feel like I have a major issue.

I'm glad I found this. I'm currently on holiday at the min and everything I eat has been giving me slight, very slight pain and discomfort. Its almost like I can feel the food churning away inside. I'm hoping its just do with different foods here in thailand. Maybe a bit spicy. Trying not to worry but reading this post makes me feel a bit better.

a friend of mine is a dietician and she saids that breads expand in our stomach as well as pasta's and tortilla's. A nutritionist at kaiser also confirms this. They also say we should toast our bread first. I try to stay away from breads, pasta's and tortilla's. Hope this helps. ;)

Do you think it copuld be acid? I was lucky enough never to have suffered with acid. What does acid feel like? Does it start when you are actually eating? I will get checked out when home but at the moment in thailand, I'm not going to a doctor.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
