Day 5 and zero desire for liquids especially milk

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if this should be post-op or nutrition but anyways, I had surgery on Monday, came home Wednesday and started what I thought to be the perfect diet going into this:

  • 8oz milk with Protein powder
  • 8oz pudding with Fiber powder
  • 8oz milk with Protein Powder
  • 8oz pudding with fiber powder
  • mix of Water and juice through the day

Friday I lost all desire for any sweet drinks and the thought of milk repulses me.

Saturday, I had instead loose grits with mushy bacon bits and mixed-in egg. I got 4oz down fine but then an hour later nausea.

I can only slightly tolerate fruit juice or frozen Splenda fruit bars (Eddy's). I know total Fluid intake today will be less than 30oz and that scares me.

According to post-op literature, I am treating this as food rejection and re-attempting a clear diet for 2-days; but I am still scared I will dehydrate.

I have not vomited since surgery, but the feeling is strongly there all day now. I am taking GasX, Tums, Roxicet, and Promethegan suppositories (for nausea) on appropriate schedules. I walk around the house as much as my back can tolerate. Please help so I don't need to go back and get put on IVs.

Im a little over a month post op and yesterday was the first time I was able to drink Water. I dare not go for the stuff you have been taking but I have been on a liquid diet every since surgery. You MUST drink something. broth, Icy, apple juice, something. We dont want to see you back in the hospital. (I know I stayed there for nearly a month after surgery)

Paul, I'm so sorry you're not feeling better. I'll share my post op eating/drinking plan. Maybe something in it might work for you.

I did no dairy the first week. Sometimes post WLS patients become lactose intolerant. If you want to stick with dairy, try chewable lactose tablets.

I did:

Decaf peppermint tea, reduced sodium broth, or sugar free spiced apple cider w/about 6 oz of Fluid EVERY morning after taking a Prilosec OTC for reflux. This relaxed my sleeve and moved the gas so I wouldn't feel sick or bloated.

Then for several hours, I sipped an Isopure RTD until it was finished That way I got in 20 oz of Fluid with 40 g of Protein. You can get bottles of this from GNC or Vitamin Shoppe.

The rest of the day i used crystal lite or any of the sugar free drink mixes, Water, broth or tea to hit my surgeon's fluid goal for the day.

Hope that some of this might help and please don't hesitate to contact your doctor if nothing changes .

Feel better soon...

If you are nauseous all the time, every day, you need to talk to the doctor and make sure everything is OK.

Otherwise, I had an aversion to just about everything after surgery. I wasn't allowed to have dairy the first week. I couldn't stomach the Protein drinks so I did my best to stay hydrated with clear broth, Decaf tea, and Water. I was also on omeprazole daily for the first few months - it was a lifesaver. Don't know how people recover without it.

I started in with milk in the second week and then moved on to drinkable yogurt. I found what tased good one day would taste nasty the next. It was a constant struggle. Just do the best you can to stay hydrated. At one point, I switched to full sugar gatorade because I was seriously getting dehydrated and taking in almost zero calories - I felt like garbage.

These first couple weeks are really tough, but you can do it. Make sure to chek in with the doc, though. Persistent nausea is not a normal thing. Also, check your temp - that will indicate an infection, if there is one.

Good luck--

Thanks for the suggestions, I went back to a clear diet and felt much better on Sunday and was able to get 67oz down. I continued feeling better on Monday (today) and have included some NSA apple sauce and some clam chowder (with Water instead of milk). After hearing several others complain about milk, I think that is what happened to me. I will give it a few days without any milk and see if things continue to progress as nornal. I know I can get lactaid, but I started on pro-biotics and I got some whey Protein that can mix with Water or fruit juice, so I will try that before going back to milk.

Thanks again, you people are the best.

I ate ice to keep fluids in. I was unable to et much Water in without nasuea. Try ice and the sugar-fee popsicles. They were a lifesaver for me. I also stayed on clear-liquid diet for about 10 days and then added full iquids, but they were strained and did that for another 10 days. Maybe you should look at doing claer-liquids a little longer. I got tired of broth ... try the Lipton Soup in the red box - Noodle Soup and strain out the noodles. I also had egg drop soup from my local restaraunt and again .. strained out the egg. Once I went to full liquids I ate the egg (PROTEIN)!

Good Luck!!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
