General anesthesia issues

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery on Nov 9th and I'm not really worried about the surgery itself. I feel like I have spent years researching this subject and I've made the right decision for me with regard to the sleeve. My only real concern is going under general anesthesia. I have only been under twice in my life (at 16 and 19)....both were oral surgeries. However, both times I threw up while coming out of it and I had to be intubated. Has anyone else had this experience? Even though it was over 20 years ago, I remember it being horrible. Just wondering how common it is. I'll definitely talk to my surgeon about it when I meet with her two weeks prior.

Hey Lisa :)

I just had my surgery on Monday and I was worried about the anesthesia too. The one thing I do remember is being nauseated and repeating it over and over. I'm sure they got tired of hearing it and I don't know what or how much they gave me but I never threw up and the nausea passed. I agree about talking to your doctor about medications for after surgery but make sure you talk to the Anesthesiologist (Dr. that gives the anesthetist in the Operating room) and the Nurse Anesthetist ( the one who will probably be with you when you start to wake up after surgery). You probably won't see these people until you are in preop before surgery. They have several different medications that they can give you if needed. Not to mention that the Anesthesiologist is the one who will write orders for your care in recovery (medications) until you are transfered to your room. ( at least at my hospital). Good luck with your surgery and good vibes for a vomit free recovery!

I've not experienced this, but you should tell your doctor about this as I've heard that they can change the type of anesthetic to avoid this, but you need to make sure you let them know well ahead of time.

Your anesthesiologist will come talk with you before surgery. Just be sure to mention your history with nausea and they can give you several different things to *help* prevent it. Nothing is guaranteed though. They can offer decadron and Zofran for sure. Phenergan also. I ALWAYS used to get sick with surgery and since they started with those meds I mentioned, I have not been sick once since. Good luck to you!smile.gif

Thanks guys!!! I feel better about it now!!

I am an OR nurse and it is just about routine now for all general patients to get Zofran inter operative and just about 100% stops any nausea, just mention to you gas person and see if they do this, I bet they do...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
