How is weight loss for people over 50?

How is weight loss for people over 50? Can we still expect to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week with the band?

elainek: The surgeon who did my lapband is in the Seattle area. He is at Valley Medical Center in Renton. His name is Hanafy. He is a wonderful, compassionate person. If you could get him to do the fills, I'm sure you would be pleased. Good luck!

I walked on the treadmill for 1 hr 5 minutes - 4 MILES - yes gang that's a 16.25 minute mile.

Good on you Indio!:high5:

hi, i'm 54 (barely), wheelchair bound (for now!) and losing weight just fine, so far. i had my surgery in canada on january 18, 2007. i don't know exactly how much weight i've lost (can't stand on a scale) but judging by the way my clothes fit, i've lost 30-40 lbs. (2-3 sizes?). ideally, i'd like to lose another 70 lbs., or so. two things drive me, 1) i want to stand and walk again, and 2) i want to be easy(er)to lift if it should come to that. oh, and 3) i want to be pretty, again, and 4) i want to look great in clothes, and 5) i want to be able to get down the aisle of an airplane without seat burns on my saddle bags (i use that little on plane wheelchair), and 6), and 7), and 8), and, and, and.... this is my first entry on this site. 'hi' :-).

Elaine, I'm sending you a big hug! :car: This is a great spot to share your triumphs and your plateaus. You have a great attitude and you'll reach your goal. I have arthritis and being mobile is my motivation. It's a great motivator! I've lost 26 pounds since my surgery. It hasn't been fast, but then I haven't been on a 'diet' per se, just trying to change my horrible eating habits!

Good luck and keep the faith!

I plan (hope) to not get weighed very often after I am banded. When I did all the other diet/weightloss/starvation programs, I lost weight v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y, and it would make me furious.

Forestcat5, I'd like to encourage you to get a digital scale. I did and I weigh myself everyday...NOT because I expect a weight loss everyday, but doing so helps me see how my body weight fluctuates (sometimes in tenths!) and helps me keep in mind that this journey isn't just about the pounds. Like the others here I've experienced the 2 pounds down, 1 pound up syndrome. Then my body levels off at that 1 pound lost. Then sometimes I'll go days before I see much of a change and then bam! I'll be down 3 pounds. If I didn't weigh everyday and track it, I wouldn't notice those changes. Getting on the scale once a week it might appear that I hadn't lost any weight when getting on it everyday, I know my body's doing its 'dance' and that in a few days it will register that loss.

Just my observations...

good luck!

oh and my weight loss and definitely been v-e-r-y s-l-o-w!!!

Hey does anyone know how this board works? My mother in law was enjoying posting whenever she came over to use my computer. Now when she tries to log on, it says she has the wrong password. So she clicked where it said to have the password sent to her email address. Then they gave her a new password. She tried using that password, but it still said she had the wrong password.

She likes to post in the over 60 thread. It seems like she is going to have to completely start over from scratch and re-register or something.

I am down 50 lbs but I probably gained over the weekend. We went out of town. I ate a bunch of junk I haven't had in months.

Back on the bandwagon tomorrow.

Denise, congrats on your weight loss!!!

As for your MIL's computer problems, isn't there a moderator she could contact? They may have had this complaint before and know of a quick fix.

Thanks Gang !!!!

My knees aren't the greatest - but they only seem to bother me on stairs and in bed sometimes. But not always.. So I am fortune there.

Phyl - When you get here you will have your water exercise which will be fun & good for you.. I have a girlfriend who teachs this at some of the clubs around the Desert - AnnMarie - I don't know if she teaches at your place or not...

Elaine & Forcast Welcome...

Forcast - congrats on you date:clap2:

Elaine - My doc says 60 grm pt minimum - and it's really not that hard to get - well for me cuz i am able to eat 1-2 cups per meal and once you read lables - there is protein in every thing - 1 oz meat has 7 grms - but when i'm on liquids - then i utilize my protein powder. Also my doc sells these clear protein powder drinks that have 15 grms of pt - and i ususaly have one of these a day - they are like crystal light - or Koolaide....

Denise :clap2::clap2: 50lbs :clap2::clap2:

Michelle - I am sorry the audit didn't go well and about your mom too. I know how hard it is not to eat when you are stressed ... :car: Hugs for you...

Hope everyone has a good day... Talk to ya'll later..

...it reminds me of something my mother said to me. She told me that whenever she accidentally caught sight of herself in public she would think 'who is that fat old bat?' before realising that it was herself. Her own private image of herself was fixed at when she was young and very, very slim.

I have this happen occasionally too. In my head I'm still slenderish w/ long blond hair...then I see myself in the mirror and think WT*%&^$! happened to me???

Help!

I haven't had one bit of trouble with my band until now. I guess the fill I got last week got tighter - too tight!

While on my way on an out of town business trip today, I started throwing up about every 15-20 minutes. Keep in mind that I haven't vomited in 40 years so this has been particularly unnerving! Anyway, half way to my destination, my doc called in a prescription for Phenergan. They are pills and I can't keep them down either. At this point even a "sip" of water causes pain and the cycle starts again!!

Has anyone been in similar situations? How long did it last? Any ideas on how to keep the meds down?

I have a full week of work activities planned and probably should just cancel, go back home and get an unfill. If I can just stop the throwing up, I would be a happy camper!

My doc said to call tomorrow if no better and maybe he could arrange an "unfill" here in Houston.

Wish me relief....

LadyHR, it sounds like you definitely need an unfill! My band was too tight at one point and I had to have some taken out, but it wasn't near as bad as this. Throwing up can cause your band to slip - I say this not to scare you, but to encourage you to seek help.

As for keeping the meds down (and this is just a thought, I have no idea if it would even work), what about crushing the pills up in some water and holding a little in your mouth and swallowing a tiny bit at a time?

Is someone there with you? I hate to think you're going through this by yourself.

Keep us posted.
