Really worried about MALNUTRITION!

Recommended Posts

I have seen a post about someone who hasn't really lost the hunger, but I'm worrying about the opposite problem..

My boyfriend is now three and a half weeks out and been back at work for a week now so I haven't been able to keep an eye on him much, but he says that he is FORGETTING to eat (well at this point its just Protein Shakes and creamy Soup, but still!).

Before hunger would tell him it was time to eat, but now he doesn't feel it so he goes the whole day with nothing and when he's home as we're about to go to bed he mentions he hasn't eaten anything!

I'm really starting to worry about malnutrition, but maybe I'm overreacting?

What do you think?

Doesn't he take a lunch break????? Shouldn't that be a que to eat? Maybe if he is having that much of a problem, he should set a timer. Or you could call him and remind him.

When I don't eat for long period of time, I get dizzy. Isn't he experiencing any side effects from not eating??

Agreed with Kelly. We should not forget to eat! It keeps our metabolisms running at full steam. Set him some timers on his cell phone or find out a way to let him know its time to eat. If he's too busy at work to remember to eat, then he really needs to step away for a moment. You don't want him to get sick!

That said I have personally forgotten to eat on several occasions. However, I do my best to make sure I'm putting something in my belly every 3-4 hours at least.

Good luck and let us know how you two figure this out.

Guilty of this. Many times. In fact when I get weak I remember to eat normally and this is DANGEROUS...don't try this at home. I have so much acid reflux and heartburn going on that eating just plain hurts and Protein shakes kill me. Sometimes yeah, it's easier not to eat. I try to remember to eat every 2 hours but honestly with the fibro and chronic fatigue I sleep A LOT and then I wake up and have to get fluids in (which is a huge challenge for me) and by the time it's all said and done, there's really no time to eat. *shrugs* It's not easy.

I'm just plain starving. I've lost so much weight since my mom passed at the end of April. I care nothing about food. I'm thinking about going to ER. Have some concerns.

So obviously he isn't getting in his Protein. If I went all day without protein I would have to be up all night catching up. This early out he should be drinking Water or consuming protein almost all the time. A schedule would be very helpful.

I dont forget to eat, but I have almost the same problem of my bariatrics nutritionist told me if I am not hungry then dont eat. So I too am worried I will not get the right nutrien. I eat small things from time to time, but vitimans only do so much. This post can help me out also! I was offically 1 month post of july 3rd.

I also don't really feel a lot of hunger. food smells and tastes good, but if i am busy or distracted i forget to eat. I try to stay on a schedule and eat small amounts thoughout the day(i am only 3 months out and have a lot of restiction still). I leave myself little notes on my desk and i know that at certain times i have to try and eat something because at this point my body is just not giving me any signals. I would try to get him on a schedule and have lots of things on hand that are quick and easy like nuts, Jerky and Protein shakes/bars. Some emails allow you to set reminders in the calander and you can even set them so they pop up at a specific time every day. If he is working on a computer at work all day this may be a good way to set a timer too!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
