I was at a seminar awhile ago and there was a speaker who was talking about how to figure how many actual carbs are in a food Item.

Lets say the calorie count was 160 calories, and 10 grams of Fiber, and 10 grams of sugar alcohols , and had 24 carbs. Does that mean you can subtract the 10 grams Fiber and 10 grams of sugar alcohols = 4 grams of actual carbs for that item??

Cuz she gave me the impression you could subtract fiber grams and sugar alcohols and whats left was the actual carbs that the item contains.

Does anyone know the formula for figuring the actual carb count of food items. If so I would appreciate a reply. I would like to have a snack inbetween the small meals that I eat now after the sleeve, like a Protein bar of some sort but the carb count is what scares me away from buying them. Thanks in all for your help on this support site. I really get alot of usefull information from all the helpful people.

I am counting all the carbs. I think it was the Atkins Diet that let you subtract fiber and sugar alcohol to come up with net carbs. Personally, I think nutrition science is quite fuzzy and so I am sticking to a more strict interpretation of "carb."

I'm with Foxbins on this one. And, just my personal experience, but foods with sugar alcohol gave and still to this very day gives me horrific gas.

I never bothered with this net carb vs. good carb vs. bad carb.

For me and me only as you'll get varied opinions on this topic, my body likes to burn those carbs, regardless of how much fiber I eat with them, over burning fat. So, a carb was a carb was a carb during my losing stage.

That is how you get a net carb, which is the actual carbohydrates that your body is going to react to. The total carbs, are the total carbs. If a food is high in Fiber, that helps from the carbs from affecting your blood sugar in the same way as carbs with low fiber in the food. This affects weight loss. If you are struggling with weight loss, I would count total carbs, but if things are going along pretty well, I would count net carbs. You need the fiber and all foods with any fiber in them are going to have carbs. Fiber is super important. That is just my two cents though.

Thanks all for your responses they have been very helpful. I am about 10 lbs from my goal and was thinking about adding in some bars for an inbetween snack. Kinda wanna think about trying to maintain prettty soon but I also don't want to get into the habit of eating too many carbs either. I think I might try some of the Atkins snack bars they seem pretty reasonable with the carbs. I sure appreciate everyones help. Thanks again.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
