I have been banded for over 6 months.I had really bad reflux pre-banding,after getting the band I hardly ever have reflux problems.I usually have a problem if I eat too fast or eat excessively spicey food. I think the band has helped me Not have reflux problems (I no longer take reflux meds everyday):clap2:

I have been banded for over two years and have awful reflux! I regurg about every night regardless of what I eat or when. I also suddenly seem to have little or no restriction. The doc's office says I sound like need a slight unfill, but I don't want even less restriction. Does anyone have any ideas? I would really appreciate input from anyone who has had a similar problem. Thanks!

Terri-ific,

We must be twins!!!!! I thought I was the only one in the world with this problem! I have the SAME thing happen to me. I just got a fill a couple of days ago and now starts the night time coughing and re-gurgitating. If I go any looser, I am too hungry all of the time. I had an upper GI and it was normal. I don't know what to do either. I am at my witt's end. I am starting to think that maybe I should not have had this done after all.

I went and had some of my fill removed yesterday (it helped the regurg last nite) but my Dr. wants me to have the upper GI servies to see if I have a hiatial hernia! Maybe we are twins! I'm not sure what to do either. This is very upsetting and I don't know what to do. I'll keep you posted and you do the same! Thanks. Terri

PLEASE only vote if youve been banded 6 months or longer.

Ive noticed that there have been in increasing number of bandsters having Reflux/Gerd problems. This may be a more commen problem in post banding then what our surgeons are aware of.

All,

I found out recently that I am highly allergic to MSG monosodium glutamate that is a food flavor additive in most, chips, Soups, chinese food and some dressings. The symptoms are tightness of throat and drainage. It is worse in the mornings. For the longest time I was thinking it was Acid reflux. The reason I tell you this is because of a post I replied to in this forum complaining of tightness of throat. Remember most Soups contain MSG. And this is what your taking in the liquid diets.

I have almost choked-to-death because of this allergy.

Let me know if this has helped you. It could save you thousands of dollars in doctor bills.<!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

It's probably too late to ask but I'd love to know if the folks who experience reflux after lapband had it prior to getting the lap band or a too tight fill or in other words where you symtom free before the lap band ?

:oI feel the same way as you. I have problems at night too. I will be dead asleep and this stuff just comes pouring out of my throat and nose and I sometimes gag. I know it is gross and its just clear liqued but it scares me. It just started with me after I got my last fill. I didn't know that it's called reflux. I also have the burning throat thing too. I know my band is a little too tight but I figured it would loosen up like the other fills. I can handle the liqued and mushie diet cause it really kickstarted my weight loss again. But the waking up to clear your nose and throat so u can breathe is a little unnerving.

Hi there! I am really bad I have not posted in about 6months, I always tell people who inquire about my band to go to this web site and read they will find everything they want to know about it but I also say that most people who are not having problems usually won't post so you will only read about mostly bad things because of that and here I am not posting forever until I am having a problem, and I first apologize for that in advance! Any way I have been banded since Aug 05 and have had no problems what so ever with my band until now. I am having sever reflux it first started at night and has gradually gotten worst in the daytime. So bad that I wake up choking because of the reflux, my chest burns all the time and so does my throat. I do not have a hard time eating or drinking at all it's just the reflux. My band is half full and I haven't had a fill in about a year. I was wondering reading all of your reply's if reflux is related to TIME, if after a certain amount of time being banded does this occur and is it normal? just a thought.

okay been banded since Feb 2003. Never had reflux before banding. Started getting reflux after my fourth fill. Went and had things checked out. doc said my pouch looked good. I told him about the reflux. He said to first try not eating past 7 or 8 pm depending on when u go to sleep. That really helps me tremendously. I can almost guarantee if I eat late I'm going to have reflux. But if I'm really stressed out..I'll have it anyways..just because of how tight the band is. Anyways I'm living with it as is. Although I have had nights where I'm literally up all night with it. The second I fall asleep..it comes right up. Soooo annoying! Well hope this helps.

I have to say I have had reflux for the last 6 years and the bigger I got the worse it got!!

I am now 1 week post op and for the first time in 6 years I DONT have reflux!!!

Interestingly it was mentioned to me as a possible serious side-effect of the band at my first consult.

Dibaby: What do your docs say about this?

Flygiir: This is an IMPORTANT and interesting question! It's not like you have had your band that long to start having problems but who knows? Are you feeling better..have you tried the advice here? Has anyone else reported reflex later on after you've had a band for a few years? I know bodies change too so it may not be the band....I sure hope not!

Hi I'm new bandster diagnosed with GERD/Reflux pre surgery. Banded 10/30/07 and the GERD IS SEVERE post surgery. Went for my first pre op visit yesterday and they removed 1cc of residual Fluid which gave me some relief. Had a CONSTANT knot in my chest which is gone now. HOWEVER the GERD - severe pressure radiating to ears (no it's not a heart attack that's my GERD Symptoms - had cardiac cath/stress test when it first happen which were normal - that's how GERD was diagnosed).

If this doesn't get better I'll be one of those former bandsters beacuse this sucker will be OUTTA here!

Thanks for letting me vent.

Katie

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
