VSG, PMS, Whacky Emotions, Oh my!

Recommended Posts

So, I've been doing tons of research and this is what I see. VSG does something to your hormones. I've read a bunch of posts about people crying, being blue, forgetful, cranky, etc. Heck! That's me on a bad PMS day!! I think this is the one thing that is truly holding me back. I already have awful pms and I (and my poor husband) couldn't handle much more. So...what's the deal?

I just clicked on a link someone posted about the usefulness of Grehlin on stress and anxiety.

Anyone out there who had significant PMS before? And I don't mean feeling a little crampy and munchy. I mean cranky, blue, etc. How are you doing now?

Don't know if I can do this.

I'm only about a week out but I'm doing fine. Not down or blue or sad or anything, mostly just normal tired "blah" from surgery and recovery. Hope this helps you out!

Thanks Renee! That's so good to know!

And I meant "Wacky" not "whacky". See. I'm freaking out so much I can't even spell. *sigh*

I had surgery on the 18th, and when I got home, I went into PMS. (my cycle starts tomorrow.) It wasn't any different. I just felt my usual mopey self. Not really upset, cranky or blue just... mopey.

VSG is not responsible for it. The fact that you are losing weight rapidly is the culprit, and while Ghrelin is responsible for some of the stress and issues, remember Ghrelin is made in other parts of the body as well.

The easiest way to explain it is that our fat stores estrogen. We're burning fat, losing weight, and all of that estrogen is dumped into our systems to be processed. Essentially, your hormones are out of whack because of the weight loss. Some don't experience the extremes, but I did. I wasn't necessarily "depressed or down" more like I was a raging B*tch on a mission right before my period would start. It regulated out as my weight loss stabilized, and I only noticed that my ovulation week was emotional.

It's a temporary side effect just like all the other stuff. Any of the WLS surgeries can experience it, and again VSG is not responsible for it. Rapid weight loss is the culprit.

The only thing the surgery really did to me was about 8-10 days after surgery (and it could have just been the anastesia working out) I was SO FRIGGEN HOT!!! I would be sweating one minute with sweat running down my back and then freezing the next. It was unreal. One extreme to the next all day long!

Freezing, Hot, Freezing, Hot!! It was crazy....and annoying! Then, it just stopped! Now, I am a little on the cold side, but I did become anemic too, so that is probably why I am colder.

I also had an extra period after surgery. But, I don't get PMS and surgery didn't cause me to have issues with it.

Good Luck!!

Kelly :)

I know the feeling - I am about 9 days out now and I am so BLAH today. I'm tired and feel like I am PMS-ing. I am really sensitive to everything - fans blowing and my hubby just being himself. I know I will be okay but I feel so grumpy! It is good to be able to explain it to people why I may be more emotional than at other times. My hubby keeps saying (jokingly) "Please don't kill me". Wimp! ha ha!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
