Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I went today to meet with my dietician, she put me on a diet, she said I have to start now, trouble is, I am going to an all-inclusive resort :) for a week in Punta Cana, DR. I am leaving in the a.m., I told her it is all inclusive, even cocktails, she did not care!!! How the heck am I supposed to come home lighter??? BTW, I am just starting out on this lap band journey, not yet banded. Any survival tips, BESIDES DRINKING THE Water? ??:angry Thanks, Kristin

Hi Tommygirl,

I went to the Dominican last April and stayed at an all-inclusive resort as well. I actually lost 7lbs. It was great! The first time I ever went away and lost weight. lol. I drank all I wanted (usually started with Mimosa's in the morning by the pool) and ate what I wanted, but I was very active. We swam, walked on the beach, did wateraerobics, took dance lessons, and danced every night in the club. It was a great time! You'll have a blast!! I'm so jealous!! :)

Sorry to be so blunt...

Ok the question you need to ask your self is DO YOU WANT THE BAND? or do you want the food and wine? If you go and gain I can bet your doc turns you down or put you on a diet till you lose a specfiic weight amount? I know most of us have given up alot to get the band. I canceled my vacation for this summer,( I have been in school full time for the last 1 1/2 years, then was prego the both the 2 years before) so I REALLY wanted to go on this vacation... But I wanted the BAND more....

Go to you resort, have a blast! Have ONE night(within the 1st few days your there) and drink your heart out. Then the next day relax and recoup. then for the rest of the time Swim, dance, swim, dance, then swim and dance again... Watch what you eat, you can still enjoy yourself with out making bad choices.. If this is as nice as you say even their healthy stuff will probley taist devine.

Just decide BEFORE you go that you are going to be good.... And when you get back, and get your BAND IT WILL BE WORTH IT>>>

Good luck

Girl, I say just HAVE FUN when you're on vacation. But when you come back work your ass off! I'm not saying to go crazy while you're there. Try to do it in moderation. But heaven help the person who tells me to resist the chocolate bar when everyone else is eating it and it looks SO good! In my experience, I relapse into poor diet behavior whenever I restrict myself too much on vacation. And if you are planning on having a bad eating day, get lots of activity in.

I agree with Jen. I think it's all about your mind set. My whole life was always about food. I planned things around the food. I wondered what kind of food would be at different event instead of thinking about the event. The FOOD was the event for me. I realized that I have to change that attitude if I want the band to work. It's just food....it will always be there. I keep telling myself that. It's just food, it's just food. It's not my friend, it doesn't make the party more fun.

You can go and have an absolutely awesome time...have a treat here and there but remember it's just food. Years from now you aren't going to remember what you had on day 3 for lunch...you're going to remember the dancing and sight seeing and laughing.

Have a great time!!

Hi, I am back from Dominican Republic and it is SOOO beautiful, the best part is I did not gain, possibly lost, from sweating, drinking tons of Water, eating right and not too much and not having any of those sweet drinks, just a few bloody marys.

I'm glad you have fun, didn't gain weight and are home safe! I went to Punta Cana in 2003 and LOVED it! Swim up bar, fun and sun....

Oh those lovely cocktails all with rum in them.....I envy you!! I went to the DR and stayed at a fantastic hotel resort in Sosua last October, and ate and drank (not at the same time) what I wanted and lost weight!! Must say, I couldn't stop swimming as I had to stay cool somehow!!

Have a great time...no dietician is gonna blame you if you do put a bit of weight on..at least you had a good excuse.

Enjoy and have a banana mama on me

I think that it will be fine I do not drink personally but the Dominican is full of fresh fruit and vegetables, sea food that is low is fat and calories and I think that if you are active and drink lots of Water along with whatever else your gonna be great.. let us know.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
