Catheter question for men

Recommended Posts

They put mine in after I was out in the operating room and then removed it right before I left recovery. I was so doped off they could of cut the whole thing off and I don't thnk I would have noticed.

Ok so I know I am not supposed to be looking in the "guy room" but did (haha) and thought I would share. I asked Doc what catheter was for? and his reply is any blood showing up can be sign of leak. After 24 hours if no fever and no blood in urine bag...they remove it. I did not have drain. I did not have to have the swallow test....went to hospital where they do hundreds of these a year and they built a whole hospital just for bariatric patients (Louisiana Surgical Specialists - LA Surgical Hospital) Guess they know what they are talking about. Just FYI (don't stress....they give alot of drugs and it really is not that bad - try to think about the good things (loosing weight) and not the bad (IV, cath).

Exactly... Learning how to drink and eat are far worse than a hose in your winky...

Instead of a foley catheter, ask for a condom catheter. Not as invasive and works just as well.

I got my surgery done at columbia presbyterian by Dr Aaron Roth june 7th, I did get the catheter while I was out cold on the OR table, as said here when the nurse grabbed it to pull it out, that feeling was hella weird for me lol, tho when I went home i did not feel any tingle or discomfort of any sort. all I know for sure is, when they got me up to walk not to be gross or a perve I did catch a semi (as in little fockers movie) lmaooo anyone experience this?

Yep, I had one too. I was a little surprised when I came to after surgery to find out I had one. Never had one before. But it wasn't too bad. I was kind of out of it and later that night after surgery, they took it out. Had to take a deep breath, and I could feel how deep that thing was up in there, just a very strange feeling.

true but funny story relating to this (kind of), I had to make a trip to the E.R. one time, while there, they decided they wanted a urine sample. since I hadn't drank anything for about 5 hours, the well was dry, the head nurse mentioned a cath. to get it, but she changed her mind when she saw the look on my face, it was a cross between (try it and die and oh-- the hell you say)

this is the part I am least looking forward to by the way

I had one put in on the table too. Just came to in recovery and poof, there it was.

It was not bad. It felt weird to not have to go pee at all. I was really nervous about the removal. Like others have said, it does feel weird. The best way I can describe it would be that it feels like the feeling you have when you have to pee REALLY bad and it's coming whether you want it or not. As a matter of fact, I even told the nurse to watch out cause I thought I was going to pee on her. She just laughed and said relax, don't worry about it.

I didn't have a catheter at all... It was hard using the bathroom at first bit forcing it out a bit cleared the pipeline and I've been good ever since

I am more scared of the catheter than the surgery. I hope it doesn't hurt next Monday!

My surgeon told me that he routinely used them for male and females. I FLAT OUT told him I did not want one. He paused for a moment and then said OK, but if I didn't urinate on my own within 3 hours of the surgery, he would have one put in. Luckiy I was able to use the restroom, but it required the "running warm over my hand" trick. The anesthesia just puts everything to sleep, including the bladder.

I would definately ask your doctor.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
