I think I kinda skipped a "eating" stage

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 3/21 so I am almost 3 weeks out. I was on liquids for 7 days after surgery and then moved to pureed foods. I stayed on pureed foods for a couple days and then started incorporating soft foods.

Did I mess up by doing that? I've been able to eat grilled chicken, small bites of baked/smashed potatoes, lean turkey deli meat, crackers (only 1 or 2), oatmeal..pretty much any food that I can chew up really well.

I haven't had any problems digesting it at all! Did my stomach maybe just heal faster or did I move on too quickly?

I feel like I'm eating a healthy diet now, instead of being on just mushies.

you did move to quickly ,as the reason ur suppose to be on liquid and phase 2 for 20 days is to let your stomach heal and not have to processor the harder foods. but if you feel okay i think you should just keep it that way,but u need to start following directions as a simple mistake may cause problems such as ulcers, hernias and so forth

And a leak. People get leaks from putting too much pressure on the staple line.

Ii would back off and follow what your doctor said to do. For all the reasons mentioned- a little vigilance now for a healthy life with a healed whole stomach is not too much to do...

FWIW, my program moves to basically all foods (with a few exceptions) from day three/four post-op. The underlying approach is, as long as food is tolerated by the sleeve, very well-chewed and not stuffed in too much, it's allowed. Though Protein is important, the program calls for a balance of fruit/veg and carbs as well. And, as the OP alluded to, they believe it's much better for the body/energy and the entire digestive system to not get "lazy" on liquids and purees; they also don't have evidence that this approach causes leaks. (My program is very experienced and academically oriented, and the surgeons and head doctors have done several major studies (esp in re: to the VSG; they also stopped doing lap-band already a couple year ago) and are all well-published in the literature.)

So the "stages" aren't written in stone. However, at the end of the day, I think this is just another example of how pre-op and post-op diets and approaches vary so widely for different surgeons/programs.

I would check the literature from your surgeon or call the office to find out what his/her diet progression is. Mine is 7 days liquids then 3 weeks of pureed or mushies. Then at 1 mo I go to soft food stage. But every surgeon's office is different so its important to do what yours tell you to do.

Call your doc or doc assistant and tell them you might have misunderstood the post op diet, tell them how you've been eating and ask them what to do. My sense is they'll say it's okay and as long as you're tolerating you should be fine. I wouldn't * assume* that though, make the call.

I called him and he said that as long as I am not eating over 1/2 a cup of food at a time, and I am tolerating everything well that it is okay. I am eating about 1/4 cup of food at a time right now and feeling satisfied.

You'll never know how bad this makes me want to whip up some tuna salad or egg salad. I was sleeved before you and I'm still on darn full liquids. I've never craved tuna so bad in my life!! LOL!

I did exactly as you did. From the day I was released from the hospital I was drinking Soup that had been pureed. Some of my paperwork was contradicting and so I got confused. Anyway, after a week I was eating baby food and didn't have any problems. Now it has been just over 3 weeks and I'm eating turkey and fish and alot of cottage cheese without any problems. I did sort of have a problem when I tried eating part of a fried egg but not a problem when I ate a soft boiled egg. I think it's because the soft boiled is softer and glides down easier. I also don't understand why people had such a problem getting the Liquid Protein down. The kind I bought was delicious and you only have to mix it with 3 ounces of Water. It tastes just like chocolate milk and it has 18 grams of Protein and 100 calories in that little amount. Downing that 3 times per day was easy. I purchased it from Trader Joe's and also a Health Food store. On the front it says "#1 Designer whey Protein in America" or something like that.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
