7 Weeks Post-Op and Internal Sutures Surfacing!

Recommended Posts

This may not be a complication but, I am curious to see if this has happened to anyone else.

I am 7 weeks post-op and yesterday morning I pulled a suture from my port incision. A little history on this incision: I did not have any sutures on the outside of my incision--they are all internal. The incision never healed well. I got a localized infection 3 weeks ago and the incision will close, then crack and drain a little so, this incision has never completely healed. I saw my doctor on Friday and he was not concerned.

Last night, I scratched one of my other scars (that has been close for weeks) and, lo and behold, another suture had made it's way to the surface which I removed.

So has anyone else had their internal sutures make their way to the surface. I know the body does that with foreign objects so I'm not overly concerned. I am wondering this might by why I am still having problems with my port incision completely healing.

Thanks Beachgirl,

I'm sure I will be too, I have just never heard of this happening before.

I just talked to a friend of mine who was banded a year ago and she had the same thing happen. Who knew?

I had my gallbladder out about 7 weeks ago, and I had a stitch (clear thread) come to the surface about 3 weeks a go. I pulled it out and haven't had any problems.

I had the same thing happen with 3 of my incisions. I just tugged on them and they came right out. You should have nothing to worry about. Just make sure you're watching for redness, oozing and/or heat at the incision sites.

Me too...I had one tiny piece come out from my port incision then a pretty big piece surfaced later from another incision. It looked like a loop of fishing twine sticking out of my skin so I gently tugged on it and it popped right out. That was several weeks ago and my doc says they look fine. I guess as long as it didn't hurt or look "bad" then I would guess that you're fine too! Weird stuff, huh?!

LindaV,

I never even thought about having internal stitches, DUH! I haven't experienced this, but I wouldn't worry, mostly because you know you are going to a very conscientious doctor and he wouldn't let something go if it were any kind of risk for you.

Hope

Yes, I had them pop through, one had puss (sorry) and I thought it was an infection so I ran to the doc... he said no, no infection and that it was quite normal.

I had 3 little stitches come up like that. I had one poke out and I gently tugged on it with tweezers and it wouldnt come out. About 3 days after i noticed it the thing finally just slid right out. I guess it isnt that uncommon. It was a little freaky though, lol!

When I had my breast reduction 4 years ago I had this problem. Turns out I am allergic to Vicryl (the stitching material) and was "spitting the stiches" out. I had a lot of problems from this including infection and some bad scarring. The first thing I did when I met with my doc was make sure he didn't use Vicryl on me!

Good luck to you!

I had the same thing happen to me with one stitch. I just kept putting rubbing alcohol on the incision because it was red and everything was fine. It scared me at first too but not to worry.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
