Quandry... Lapband/Natural Medicine

Recommended Posts

Is there anyone else here who leans toward natural medicine? Here's what I mean: After my mother almost died from stage IV cancer 2 years ago, then was cured using natural methods (because NOTHING could be done for her medically), the only doctor my family sees is a Naturopath. No more immunizations, no more antibiotics, no more x-rays... you get the point.

But here I am, decidedly overweight, and scheduled to be banded in 2 weeks. The idea of swallowing Barium and having x-rays on a consistent basis is really bugging me. But I feel like I don't have any other choice. I need to be thin to be healthy, but I don't want to compromise my otherwise good health with all this crap.

I'm hoping to hear from others who lean this way, but made the decision to be banded anyway.

Thanks.

Lizzie

Wait, I want to amend something I said...

"no more x-rays" means IF they can be avoided. Obviously if my kid breaks his foot, he'll have an x-ray to assess the damage...

I'm with ya sista. I like to go as natural as possible. You know everything in moderation. However, I just couldn't moderate my food intake without "help."

I am not sure how what you mean when you say that you will "swallow barium and have x-rays on a consistent basis." I've only swallowed barium and x-rayed once and that was right after my banding. I don't plan on anymore x-rays unless there is a suspicion of a problem.

Maybe it's the fills that you were talking about. Many surgeons don't do fills under fluro. Mine doesn't.

Good luck with your decision. Shawn

Yeah, I was talking about fills being done under fluro. With Fluro, I *think* you swallow barium then have a continual x-ray done while being filled. I could be wrong, but I was just looking it up.

So, you're saying that if the fill isn't done under fluro, then it does NOT involve x-ray?

That would be great because I feel I can justify all of this for surgery, then rememdy any negative side effects, but I wouldn't want to do all of this on a continual basis, only if necessary.

Thanks for your input!

Lizzie: You don't 'always' have to have a fill done under fluoro. My band surgeon only does them if he has issues with accessing the port.

I am going to school to become a Naturopathic myself and I try to do all natural remedies. I could not keep the band due to complications but I would suggest it to my clients if I were asked or all other avenues were explored. I do believe in the band.

I'm all about natural medicine but there are some things that just require technology and not-so-natural methods. Like Penni said, you don't HAVE to have a fill under flouro. My doc doesn't unless there's a problem.

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. I'm feeling a lot better about the idea knowing that I will not be subjecting myself to x-ray and barium on a continual basis. I can justify doing it for surgery, and occasionally if things aren't going so well.

Penni - It's interesting that you would recommend the band. I'm glad to know that. My mom says that there are remedies for food addiction, but I have not explored that avenue. I really believe that this is the way I need to go.

Thanks again girls!

Lizzie

I love natural healing as well. I have many books on the topic and learn more all the time. I wouldn't be bothered by the xray. We as humans are put through so much more damage every time we go outside. We breathe in fumes from cars and airplanes, we eat nasty preservatives and antibiotics with almost anything we eat, especially meat.

I don't think the xray will have a big impact, especially compared to how polluted the world is. Go on with your band and know that being banded will help so much more than a few xrays could possibly damage.

Lizzie, ask your doctor what the procedure is for fills. This might put your fears to rest.

Also, if you feel like trying one of your Mom's natural rememdies go for it! You can either get an early start on your pre-band weight loss or postpone your banding, if you feel it's up your alley.

Good luck. Shawn

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
