what about heartburn?

Recommended Posts

hello, I have a question about heartburn: is it something that you get used to, or it will go away in time? I hope to get banded next month, and stomach problems is my main concern. are you feeling very ill after the surgery?

I'm not a doc or even a health care professional. But, I do know heartburn!lol! If this just started, it might be nerves in anticipation of your surgery. There are meds to help, from OTC to Rx. Maybe try something like Tums, Mylanta, etc. from the store and see if it helps. You might need to see a doc for something stronger. Also, watch what you eat. It can be different for each person, but for me any greasy or acidic (tomatoes, etc.) foods can really set of an episode(really sweet stuff can do it to for me).

You will probably get better answers, I know there are some Nurses on the board that can give better advice. Take care of your tummy. Long term, untreated heartburn can be serious, so I'm told.

Best wishes on you upcoming surgery!

I suffered horribly from heartburn and reflux when I was pregnant, and I had just gotten to the point where it was becoming an everyday event (though not as bad as in pregnancy) - the 5oclock pick up of all the junk round the house was torture. I was nearly back to using the long barbeque tongs to pick stuff up off the floor, lol. I did that at 200 months pregnant.

I've not had even an inkling of it since banding. It was as magic as giving birth, it just went away, like that!

Hi

I have never had heartburn before the band and for a year after I had the most horrible hot feeling in my esophagus and stomach......I never got used to it...never...it is really the most horrible feeling that just felt like it sat at the front of my brain and I couldnt concentrate on much of anything while feeling like that.....

It is gone now...we have prayed it away.....and they treated me for H Pylori and an ulcer and I feel that I can now deal with the pain I have abdominally and behind the band....I feel restored as a person since it has been gone.....

:hungry: Hey, my lapband cured my heartburn! I know this to be fact because last Saturday I went for my first fill and there was a leak somewhere. I had 1cc in my band and no heartburn, but he let all out of my band and I could not return to get it fixed until yesterday. The:sick ugly heartburn returned until I had my port fixed and got 2cc in my band. It really is amazing how this band stops heartburn dead in it's tracks!:clap2:

I never had heart burn or reflux until about 9 months post band. The Doctor cannot explain why it started because most people get rid of it. Oh lucky me!

Hi Seppi

I had an emtpy band for almost a month in December and I am sure that eating normal and healthy...sort of....helped to cure the constant "hotness" I had... good luck....

Desert Mom- Hopefully being unfilled will help-I have been unfilled for 3 1/2 months. I am taking nexium which seems to be helping. I am also trying to avoid foods that seem to aggravate. I never had the bringing more the pain in the breastbone area. Should clear up soon.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
