Reality is slapping me pretty hard this morning...

Recommended Posts

So I haven't been as active on here as I was a few months back because I was getting used to the idea that I may not be able to have surgery for about 6 more months. Originally I though I would be able to have surgery some time in September of this year but There was no way we could come up with the money and save/plan this wedding at the same time. So September passes and here I am...

As you all know with the Sleeve time is crucial and with our wedding date set for 11/12/11 I was mentally preparing for still having to feel HUGE on my wedding day...Well NOT ANY MOREEEE!

Last night my Fiancee' came home and said that he had sat down with some of his family (who I am very close with) and asked for the chunk of money we were not going to be able to come up with for months....

Now.. at first I was kind of upset that he had talked to them about it with out me there... but when he handed me the check for over half the surgery amount I literally dropped to my knees.

This was at about 7 last night and I jumped on the phone (praying some one would be working late) with Dr. Aceves' office. No one answered and I was sooo antsy last night I could hardly sleep!

This morning I hopped out of bed bright and early to call the office.

I already sent in my paperwork months ago so they had me on file when I called and Nina gave me possible dates.. One of which is NEXT FRIDAY, November 26th?! and my other more likely option will be the 9th-12th of December!!

So right now I'm waiting for a call from my fiancee to let me know that his boss is ok with him taking those extra 2 days off...and then I'll be headed to the post office to send the deposit check!

Now... I'm sitting here having read the forums for about the last 8 months telling myself I know what I need to prepare and logically working through things in my head... Kinda.

haha I literally though this was something so far away still and now its right here breathing down my neck. I know its the right decision for me and I am 100% in confident in choosing Dr. Aceves..Its just that reality is setting in...

There are so many things like Vitamins, supplements and Protein that I though I would have a few more months to nail down.. and Now, even having read so much from all of you, I feel like this is all so foreign and new again.

Maybe its just cus I'm so excited and haven't really come back down to earth from last night yet but I feel as if I know nothing.. What vitamins are the best post op (brand), what do I really know about PPI's, and what shakes have the right balance of protein/carbs/serving size for our small tummy (not worried about taste)?! Now all of the small things that I haven't read about are starting to cross my mind too like how well does chewing ice when you are on Clear liquids work to take away the desire to chew (Random I know)...

ANY WAYS I know I'm rambling and there was nothing specific that I really want a response about but any feedback would be appreciated. I just wanted to share what has been running through my head non-stop for the last 12 hours...

I know as the day goes on I will calm down and your responses will hopefully give me a little kick and remind me that I have done more reading here in the last 8 months then I can even wrap my mind around.

Thanks in advance!!

I know that feeling. I had decided to wait until next year so I could put money in my health care spending account for my deductible and 20%. My dad told me to get it done now and he would give me the money. I was beyond excited. I am having surgery Dec 1. Today I feel a little panicky. Yesterday I was excited. The emotions change by the minute. Good luck and it's nice to have family that is supportive.

Hooray for you that your surgery will be sooner than later! Don't worry about all those questions about Protein and Vitamins because everyone is different and you won't know until you get to that point. Both my husband and I are sleeved (two months apart) and he can tolerate different Protein Drinks than me and he takes different vitamins. You have done tons of research and are ready for it! Just listen to your doctor and concentrate on a quick healing from surgery. We will all be here for you during your weight loss journey. Again, congrats on your upcoming surgery.

EAS Myoplex Carb Control is an excellent choice. It's not super thick, is good on Protein levels and very low cals and carbs. You can also add an powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Unflavored packet to it to add 20g extra Protein per serving. It will still have less than 200 calories per drink.

Good luck!!!

What a blessing for you to be given the chance to have it sooner and now you will have almost a year under your "sleeve" before the wedding. What an amazing fiance to go out on a limb for you. I say he is a keeper for sure!

Thank you all for the well wishes. I have not stopped telling him how amazing this whole thing is for the last 24 hours. No one has ever given me something that was so life changing. It's all happening super fast but as everyone has said it's perfect timing for the wedding. ;-) and yes I will most likely have to wait till a couple weeks b4 the wedding to get my dress but I'll Have Sooo many more options then I do at this point ! Lookin forward to all the changes! Thanks again for the support.

Have you tried costco? I could have gotten them two mixed up. They are in the 11 oz individual ready made drinks. They are in a Silver looking box. They have chocolate and vanilla. It's not the lite, its called EAS AdvantEDGE Carb Control - 110 Cals.

I hope you can find it! I can't stand the Atkins shakes, way too thick for my taste.

I actually like the unjury drinks. I mix them with just Water...even the chocolate Splendor (like hot choc to me). Since surgery (1 week out) I have used 6 oz of Water to 1 1/4 scoops to up the Protein in smaller liquids. (had trouble getting it all in at first so was trying to up the Protein in smaller amts).

I use the Centrum chewable Vitamins which are ok. I also use the liquid Calcium from costco. I love the taste of it! It is called Revival (I think).

How exciting for you! Take a deep breath...all will go great!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
