Hey Everyone,

So maybe I am a vain germaphobe or maybe I have just been embarrassed too many times by having my goodies hanging out of small hospital gowns but I have been thinking about bringing my own hospital gown. There are a couple of websites I have found that offer plus sized gowns (most of these are for labor and delivery). BYOG and Dearjohnnies both offer stylish gowns that no one has worn before and look freaking adorable! I know they won't let me wear one in surgery but I will be recovering in ICU (clinic policy) and I just can't imagine wearing a regular old gown.

Is anyone considering doing the same thing? Has anyone done this?

The gowns they gave me were for bariatric patients- so they were extra, extra large. No problem with anything hanging out.

I guess its really less about size but more about style.....

I would check with the clinic to see if they will allow you to wear a gown other than theirs for surgery.

Donna is right, it would be up to the DR or the O.R. staff as it is their responsibility to see that everything is sterile.

I didn't care what the gowns looked like, and believe me as soon as I was awake enough I was rolling mascara on, and lipstick was applied shortly afterwards. The sizes were beyond accommodating, and I didn't worry about anything hanging out.

I did take a front closure sport bra so I wasn't flashing high beams at everyone when I walked the halls. But, I honestly didn't care about what I was wearing. Between the leg stockings, the no-slip socks, the IV pole, the least of my concern was what the gown looked like. I was able to change into my lounge pants and big t-shirt once I was up and mobile after my band surgery.

The gown was big enough and as soon as I was awake and could stand I put on undies. After the first night I put on my own clothes and felt better a big t-shirt and some comfy pants and I felt better almost immediately.

My hospital had an entire bariatric surgery wing complete with bariatric sized wheelchairs, beds, gowns, socks, etc. Mine were comfy and plenty roomy. The only clothes I brought were what I wore in and I wore the same things back home.

I didn't have any issues with falling out of the gown. They only allowed me to stand at bedside the first night. As soon as the catheter came out the next morning, I put on my comfy jammy pants to wear with the gown to walk the halls. To be honest, as long as my butt was covered, I didn't care.

Does everyone get a catheter?? I've never had a catheter before...this is perplexing to me.

My surgeon puts one in after you're under and removes it before you wake up. I didn't feel a thing. Some surgeon's leave it in for a while, just depends on your surgeon. It's a good question to ask so you don't have any surprises when you wake up.

Thank you for all the great responses! TiffyKins, I am with you...I will be putting makeup on as soon as they give me the okay! I guess I was worried about the back being open and all that mess. I tend to be uncoordinated and really don’t want to show the whole hospital my hinney while walking down the halls!

I am also worried about sleeping in ICU. Once of my co-workers had bypass and she said that you are so dopped up that you could sleep through a tornado!

Is that everyone's experience as well?

Does everyone get a catheter?? I've never had a catheter before...this is perplexing to me.

Unless you want to pee all over the operating table you get one, lol. You don't even know when they put it in. It's no big deal, really.

My nurses let me urinate before going into surgery therefore there was no need for a catheter. For me, they are a big deal. They irritate my uretha, I always get some funky itch that I can't kick for a week, and overall, they are not pleasant. I didn't have one for the last 4 surgeries I've had (band, revision, leak repair, and gallbladder removal).

Save your $$ for some cute clothes when you're skinny!!!!! :cool0:

The gowns will fit, they'll be clean & it's only for a day or two.

I had to use the hospital gowns, and didn't wear any of my clothes until the day I left. The gowns are plenty large. I did ask for a second gown I could put on so that I could walk the halls and not worry about my booty making an appearance....so I doubled up and walked.....in the ever so attractive, stockings, IV pole, and double gown....yay!
