post-op pain....the worst 1 and a half day of my life...

Recommended Posts

i got surgery last friday, and i'm home by now.

but the pain right after surgery and the next day does not compare to anything i had ever experienced. it was so intense i had regret ....everything. nothing is worth that much pain.

even today i still think of it and it makes me sad.

for some reason pain killer did not work for me. (or at least i thought so)

it seems i get too sleepy with anesthesia and i'm not waking up on schedule......and to add another one i "forget" to breath (the exact words) even 5 hours later in the icu,and 7 hours after that later in my room......

so i can't take powerful pain killers right after surgery when they are most needed:cursing:

a long story short....

i had read almost everything there is,the good and the bad stories, but there is always something that can happen, good or bad permanent or only for a short time period.

in the hospital people asked me if i had done it if i new......my answer was -no way!

i may think differently in a month.....but that is for later.

I'm sorry you had a rough recovery, and horrible pain. I honestly don't know what I would have done without my Lortabs.

I hope your recovery goes more smoothly from here on out, and if you need anything let us know.

Thanks for having the courage to post your feelings. I do hope each day gets easier for you. It was a bit of a shock for me on many levels, pain, discomfort, unpleasant sensations...I was scared. I was too scared to even know how I felt I mean once done you can only move forward. With that said, while awake don't forget to breath, take deep breaths, walk as much as you can and sip. It will get easier. Time really does heal us. Keep us posted in any event good or not so good.

Stay positive! You will feel better soon! Try to relax, I know it is easier said than done but being super tense is going to make it worse. Rotate with ice packs and heat where is hurts. 20 minutes, then take a break.

I had an anxiety attack the 2nd night after surgery. I had to lay down, breath slowly and talk myself out of it.

And you are not the only one! Many of us girls swear that after giving birth, we would never do it again! For two days after my first child, I wondered how I would tell my husband no more kids. You will forget the pain when you see your success. And I ended up having two more children!! : )

I hope this stage passes quickly for you!

All I can suggest that you walk as much as humanly possible right now. It is amazing what that does for your recovery. I know this is the last thing that you want to hear but It will help. I had a freak out moment a few days after my surgery, I think it was mostly from the lack of food, and the discomfort gets to you after a few days makes you on edge, and you just give in. It will pass. Remember you've made it this far! Best wishes!

thank you all for your nice words.

i'm sure in a week or so the world will look different....i'm already better.....

.....walking in the hospital actually works!!

i have only some discomfort (no pain anymore) and i need to hold my belly with my hand when i walk, but even that is almost over.

the thing that bothered me the most is that i wasn't prepared for this,

although i have read a few pain stories.....

maybe i just ignored them because they were only a few....thinking the majority is not hurting so why should i.....need to re-think this next time:001_rolleyes:

The pain for me was really bad because they didn't give me a morphine drip right after the surgery. When the pain medicine started wearing off it felt like someone was trying to kill me. As soon as I got the morphine, life was soooo much better.

that was the point in my situation, no morphine related meds. just simple pain killers....which didn't do anything at all the first day.....

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
