Mine is 36, but over sewed to be closer to a 34. I am able to eat 1/4 a cup or 2 oz per meal. I'm one month out and my weight loss since surgery has been 17.5 lbs.

Determined, stick with your surgeon. Everything happens for a reason. if a little bigger bougie keeps you hydrated and able to get nourished, then whala! It's all good. Who knows, five years from now, they may determine that 40 is the best size given the 5 year study. Being able to eat 3 oz additional food over the course of a day is nothing. I think the most important part is trusting your surgeon and having the willingness to change your life in ways that will have you be successful regardless of the bougie size.

Lee,

I am concerned that going with the bigger one maynot cut out all the fundus/gherlin which is my understanding what gives you the hunger feeling. I am wondering if in the end that will play a part in long term loss...??

I think that what will determine long term loss is how strictly we stick to the diet recommended by our surgeons. There is no fail safe method here. In the end, it's still up to us. What they give us is a tool. What we do with it is up to us. No guarantees. That said, the difference between 32 and 40 is so minimal. Maybe an ounce at a year out? We're still going to have to watch calories, restrict carbs and fat, but the Sleeve will make it so much easier. Let's just look at it as a challenge!

My doctor used a 34 on me he said. I asked him how they made the decision and he told me in his research he found that 32-34 had the highest weight loss but also the highest happiness with their sleeve.

I have no idea if that is true. I wanted a 40 and he just said there isn't a lot of difference, but that he really recommended the 34.

I was sleeved 12 days ago and have lost about 21 lbs overall. Last night I ate a hearty bowl of homemade chicken Soup and felt satisfied for the first time b/c I had been hungry all day.

Determined1, my surgeon told me that his review of the research shows no difference in weight loss based on the bougie size, but that the smaller ones increased the risk for acid reflux. So again, trust your surgeon. I'm sure he or she would be happy to answer all your questions so you understand his or her reasons for choosing the size you're getting.

Trust your surgeon.

The difference between a 32 and 40 is like comparing your pinky finger to your ring finger in diameter. It's so minimal.

I know I can consume more food per meal than some that have a 34-36fr boughies. Does that mean anything to my results or theirs, NO. Everyone is different, every surgeon's technique is tweeked for their preference. Size is only part of the equation.

Everyone's anatomy is different. The diameter is determined by the measuring tool, and technique. But, the length (which contributes to capacity of the sleeve) is strictly determined by each individual patient.

Willingness to recognize that the boughie size will not determine your overall success will serve you well on this journey. Each person has to make lifestyle changes, better food choices, and realize that it's more than just getting the tiniest tummy possible.

See what makes me question this is because during the 'seminar' (approx 60 ppl there) I raised my hand and asked what size bougie. Dr. answered 40, not 'well it depends on the patient', that raised some flags (Dr. usually does DS), then when I see ppl on here actually talking to their dr about their sizes-more flags raised. Then when I again asked dr in the consultation she said she does everyone a 40. I understand its a tool and up to me/choices/lifestyle changes. But what is also up to me is learning everything i possibly can before surgery so there's no regrets. I want to be as informed as i can to make decision, why I'm asking all these questions from everyone here, which I appreciate so much. You guys have been so helpful and like a backbone of faith.

It seems like you just need to have another conversation with your doc about this issue. Ask her why she does everybody at a 40, ask her about your concerns about removing all the grehlin-producing part, and explain to her why this is an issue for you. If she is able to address your concerns, great. If not, you may want to consider looking for another surgeon.

Everyone at my facility gets a 40. Less nausea and dehydration. I can honestly say that with my 40 I haven't had a moment of nausea post-op this week.

This is really good advice. It's your body. You need to understand the ifs, ands, and buts. You need to trust your surgeon and be comfortable with the decision. Let us know what you decide.

I too just had my surgery done, and have a 40 and have had zero stomach issues so far! I think you have to trust your surgeon, maybe have a good talk with the surgeon and explain your concerns.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
