Scars from Surgery

Recommended Posts

I was wondering how everyone has done with their scars after surgery? I am very fair skinned and am somewhat concerned with the scars from the incisions. What is your experience? Has yours disappeared or is it minimal? My boyfriend had Lap Band and his scars are pretty dark and noticeable.

It takes a long time but eventually they become nearly invisible in most people. I had laparoscopic gallbladder surgery 10 years ago and could not even see where the scars were anymore. Now I have new ones from the sleeve. I'd rather have the scars than the fat, that's for sure!

I have at least 10 scars on my tummy from the band and sleeve surgery plus all the drain sites that I had to deal with through the leak repair and hospitalization in July.

The lap sites from all the incisions are still pretty noticeable, but they are a pretty pink color. The ugliest scar is from where the port was with my band surgery. I had the band placed October '08, and the scars are the same color/size as the couple of new incisions my surgeon had to do for the revision to the sleeve.

I know they'll fade over time. I had lap knee surgery in '93 and '99, all of those scars are minimally noticeable at this point.

I'm also very fair skinned, and all my scars end up being a pretty pink color.

my scars are visible but not that bad. I am afraid they will get darker but let us wait and see. my doctor prescribed Contractubex 20g gel. he advised using it for 3 months twice daily.

Pretty pink? Oooo...want pictures, Tiffy!

Mine have all but faded, the largest one is the exception. But I can tell that eventually they will be very hidden. Then again, I got belly hair, dark brown. I would imagine that if any of you ladies had this kind of hairy belly you'd have more to worry about than a few little scars... :)

This is a picture of just my 3 of my lap sites from the band surgery. This was taken around April 2009 (so 6 months post band placement). I have 7 other scars/lap sites 3 from the sleeve revision, and from the 4 drains being placed. I scar really easily. I did buy some Mederma, but I gave up on using it.

Bob you are a hoot - :)

I am extremely fair skinned and almost all of my incisions have nearly disappeared - the only one that is still quite noticeable is the largest one where they took the stomach out - but, like Tiffy, it is not ugly, it's "pink" and I believe over time it, too, will fade.

Mine actually look better at 5 months out than Tiffs picture of her's at 6 months -- I use Prefer On Instensive Scar Management Therapy (WalGreens - $9.99). Don't know if that is what helped or not, but doesn't seem to have hurt anything - they are very faded.

Mine are not healing as well as I would like. The one where thy took my stomach out is fine.all healed up. the one above it ( under my left girl) is a mess. It keeps oozing blood and pus. It was/is a tiny little thing, but, it just won't heal. I am one month out. I am keeping it clean with alcohol. and covered lightly. (gauze) I think I caused this to happen. I wear an underwire bra. I think it irratated that site and ground some dirt in or something. All my other wounds are healing nicely enough. One of them opened up when I took the stiches out. Pcp here said it will heal from the inside out. Will just take longer. I am with Cajun on the scars VS fat. gimme the scars, there is always a one piece suit for the pool. Plus you can say you had some moles removed.

That is what it looks like. There is always tatoos for coverage. LOL Wait for at least a year or two before resorting to that. Tiffy could get a pink (breast cancer) ribbon to cover hers. HA

Oh, my goodness. Was kidding about the pictures, Tiffy! *laughing*

Bob - haven't you learned yet to be careful what you ask for around us women, or you just might actually get it -- like the pic Tiffy posted for you? LOL:001_tt2:

I am 1 month post op and I am amazed how well all my incisions sites have healed. They are just a little light scar. Not that visible. The only one that is darker pink is where I had the drainage bag. Is this where they took out my stomach? All the other incisions areas are the same tiny size.

Ha ha ha Bob, I am probably one of the least modest women you'll ever meet.

My scars look a little better today, but some of them look weird because of the "flabbiness" of my tummy.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
