Highly recommend corset after surgery

Recommended Posts

Day 1 post op, they just put a corset on me! Wow this thing is great. So much easier to move and cough. Much better than just the pillow. If the hospital dies not offer it to you I highly recommend asking for one!

After my band replacement, I went out and bought firm control Shapewear, which I wore for 3 weeks after surgery. It made such a difference, because yes it was easier to cough, or even sit up, and more importantly, when I was suffering from bad nausea and was retching, it didn't feel like my stitches were going to bust open.

Great tip!

Great idea! My doctors and nurses didnt mention one but I do have firm shape wear. Mine are the kind that are shorts and come up to right under my bra. Do those not hurt any of your incisions?

This is a surgical corset that velcros close around you. It covers all my incisions. My incisions seem really high up to me. Not sure I will be able to Pitt a bra on later to go home.

Wow, never heard of them putting a corset on you after surgery. Smart, very smart. Like the idea of velcro too since you wouln't have to "shimmy" into it so soon after surgery. Best wishes fellow bandster on your new journey!

I just wore a Shapewear singlet because I had an incision just between my breasts high up on my sternum and wearing a bra hurt it. So I happened on the benefits of shapewear for my incisions quite by accident trying to solve a different problem.

rbmk14 I am wearing the kind of shapewear you're describing now after Lipo and I can honestly say it's irritating the incision I was talking about above even now, 2 months post band replacement, so if your incision is anywhere close to where mine is, I'd go for a different sort of shapewear.

Just asked and my hospital doesn't have them. Th nurse did say it would be ok for my sister to bring me a sports bra to wear... One of my breasts is pressing on an incision and so long as the bra is pulled up high enough to avoid the incision I can try it out.

I was going to buy one but my surgeon said no. I cant remember her exact reasoning, just that she did not like them. I used a miniature pillow pet the first few days post op and it worked wonders.

I think a corset with bones is a HUGE no no, because it will press on your port site and cause issues (don't ask me how I know that :P) but a girdle or Shapewear shouldn't be an issue. Just nothing that is too rigid.

It is a surgical corset or also know as an abdominal binder. There are no bones in it.

That reminds me o a line from steal magnolias, "I haven't left the house since I was 14 without Lycra on my thighs". Ha ha I never leave to work without one.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
