Best Tuna salad I have ever had...

Recommended Posts

I am 8 days (tomorrow) post-op and have been given permission to start back on some soft foods. tuna with a little light mayo in it was an approved meal. I mixed some up while I was making dinner for the fam. I have to say that was the best 1/2 cup of tuna salad I have ever had.

I know it may sound silly but it is so true to a newbie. It felt good to actually chew something instead of just letting it slide down, lol. I chewed so carefully and enjoyed ever moment of it.

I think I may try an over easy egg in the morning. ;)

I like the feeling of being full on a half cup of food and not a thanksgiving feast. So far I have not had one ounce of regret that I made this decision to have the band. I was so nervous and worried this time last week that I was making a mistake. Regardless of what anyone else that I have told thinks of this choice I know in my heart and mind that this was the right thing to do.

That's wonderful for you! I'm 8 weeks post op and still waiting for that restriction feeling. I'm only down 9 lbs from the day of surgery (Nov 29, 2012)...but I did lose 20 lbs. pre-op so I don't know if I'm expecting too much or not! I've even had one fill on Jan 16th! My next fill isn't until Feb 20th! I think in my best interest to wait it out and not rush the fills according to several posts on the www. obesity help . com forums.

I felt like a martian or something eating food for the very first time. I wanted to make yummy, nummy sounds but was afraid my husband would have thought I had lost it or something. ^_^:o:D:blink:

Didn't want him to think I liked my tuna more than him, hahah

One thing I have been noticing with the progression is that the feeling of satisfaction is not immediate, it is coming about 10-15 minutes after I finish eating. I have always heard that before but could never get there without having two bowls of this at dinner or a couple plates of that.

I saw a topic the other day on soft stops too, and I have also noticed that after I stopped eating anything I have hiccup/burp. I did it a few nights ago with some soupy mashed potatoes and I did not listen to my body and I was in misery for hours after. I finally went to bed just to go to sleep so it would stop hurting. Hopefully I will not make that mistake again.

I was also given permission to start mushy food and thought I'd try tuna and cottage cheese...it was actually really hard to swallow. I think tuna is too dry, maybe I jumped the gun a bit and should of stuck to mash vegetables. :)

Tuna alone is a bit too dry for me too but I mix it with fat free creamy ceaser salad dressing..... It's moist and yummy

I mashed and mashed and stirred and stirred for like 5 minutes when I put the mayo in. I also did not take a bit any larger than my thumb nail and chewed like there no tomorrow.

These are all of the things I have been reading on here so I wasn't taking any chances right out of the gate.

If you don't care for mayo, do you like ranch dressing? I used to have tuna and a bit of ranch dressing mixed before I had surgery. It makes for a different taste and adds some much needed moisture.

I will have to try it again maybe with something moister than cottage cheese. I only took small spoonful also but found if I chewed it too much I sucked all the liquid out and was left with dry tuna. Not game to try it for awhile but will definitely attempt it again in a week or two when I'm onto solids :)

this is so funny! I'm 10 days post op and was also given the OK to eat soft foods today. I too had tuna and mayo and just like you, I thought it was the best tuna I've ever eaten...LOL! I did the same as you....small forkfuls, chewed well, and also used a timer to make sure I was waiting 15 seconds between bites. It took me 45 minutes to eat 2 1/2 oz. of tuna but that was OK. By the time I was done, I wasn't hungry anymore and in another 15 minutes or so, I was really satisfied.

You will not believe how good things taste now. The band is curbing your love of eating, now you are free to concentrate your love of food.

As for over eating, I sit down at the table with my 1/2 cup, when it is gone, I am done, soft stop or no soft stop. Mistress Band taught me the hard way what will happen if I go back for seconds, besides if I only eat my pre-measured amount the changes of me stretching my pouch or causing a band slip are negligible.

As Terry posted above, you will not believe how well food taste now, I mean for me I taste food for the first time in my life instead of scarfing it down like there's no tomorrow and half chewing. I literally taste every bite and it is so good. Unlike Terry, I eat a cup of food, that may be because of restriction I don't know but that is per dr's orders for me, yes I'm losing slowly but I'm happy with my weight loss thus far and so happy with my band.

I'm still in the healing phase Donna, I will be up to a cup of food eventually, but my surgeon wants me to be uber careful about putting pressure on the band.

(remember to try and stop eating at 20 minutes)

once the swelling goes down and the appetite returns, you will need to remember to stop bc eating slow is what we do but if we keep on eating we can eat alot...

I think that is what I have been kinda confused about. Do we measure out our food and just eat what is measured; or do we measure out our food and just what ever we get in 20 minutes is what we get?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
