Liquid preop diet starts tomorrow

Recommended Posts

I'm in freak out mode. My liquid diet starts tomorrow. Surgery is in 14 days. I did all of my preop lab work, EKG, X-ray today. And all I can think is I am going to starve the next 2 weeks 800 calories a day and no band. Are they trying to kill me before surgery??! Ahhhhhhhhhh

I was there! I was on a 3 week pre op diet. I never thought I could do it either. I can't believe I did....and trust me if I could do it, anyone can!

Good luck! Get through the first few days and it definitely gets easier :)

I started today. It's not fun. I'm weak and hungry. But i'm hanging on the fact everyone says it gets easier! You can do it!

Is your diet strictly liquid?

Mine is a 700 calorie diet that includes fruits and vegies. I get one Protein, one fruit, and one dairy at Breakfast. That could be 2 eggs, some berries and an 8 oz glass of skim milk. lunch and supper are a protein and 2 cups of veggies. My preop protein choices are: 3 oz cooked meat (lean meats only--no processed meats such as hotdogs, bologna, bacon, etc., and not fried). 3/4 cup low fat cottage cheese or 3/4 cup egg substitute, 2 whole eggs, or a Protein Shake that has at least 20 grams of protein and no more than 10 grams of carbohydrates., I like the chocolate Premier Protein ones.

I think the difficult part for me will be no snacking between those three meals. Once I eat 2 cups of veggies, I will be full! But I don't think it will last very long.

Maybe strictly liquid would be easier because you don't have any other choices to make. But I think I prefer mine over a full liquid. Of course the week after surgery is clear liquid only. They want me to drink more than 200 ounces of liquid per day in that first week post op. Wow, that is a lot of drinking. I'm still struggling to get to 60 ounces.

You will do great! I was on a restricted diet and barley got 500 calorie a day sometimes by choice. I just didn't get hungry after a few days. As long as I could drink my shakes I was pretty good and I ate clementines like they were going out of style ( can't have them now). But anyway, I had to start and stop my diet 3 times and finally just got used to it. Now after the band I am afraid of adding food back in that I will get to many calories as I have lost 35 lbs since the start of my journey.

You will be ok. I promise. Just remember why you started.

I am a prison nurse and on my feet 8-16 hours a day I am so scared of becoming weak. My doc is allowing 800 calories a day 2 shakes a basically a lean cuisine and a snack. I know what got me in this situation I just didn't realize how much I ate.

I too am on the low calorie, shake, Protein diet. I started 4 days ago and it does get easier. I even thought maybe I should just go on a shake diet since they really fill you up. I lost 3 lbs already due to the excess Water retention. I am so fearful of having food stuck and throwing up all these horror stories that I read on this blog. It makes me wonder if I am doing the right thing. Anyone have any comforting words of wisdom before I shrink my stomach?

I did it...so I know you can do it and the upside ...you will lose weight, you will have a healthy liver for surgery and you will realize you don't need to eat food to live. You just need nutrition

Best of luck... Day 1-4 is the worst...be ready for it...and don't cheat. ;)

No need to freak out. Take it one day at a time. food isn't going anywhere. You can still have it at a later date. The first few days are the worst but if you mentally tell yourself everything is going to be ok then it will. You will do great! That 15 days will go by faster them you think and suddenly it will be the day before surgery!

Terry is so right about the headaches, but they pass in a day or two. It gets easier. If you owned day one, you will kick the a** of the rest of the pre-op. Stay strong! :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
