I never gave it much thought prior to surgery but now that I'm post-op and feeling all of the changes I have developed a real fear of throwing up. What if you get a stomach virus, food poisoning or even pregnant? With the band there how in the world do you throw up without totally destroying the surgeons work? Is it the worst pain in the world? How does anything come up past the band when your stomach muscles are convulsing? Sorry if this is a disgusting post, I'm just developing some real anxiety over this, and I'm not an anxious person.

I'm two years post op December 21. O have not had real throwing up yet. But, my surgeon gave me a prescription of Zofran (anti-nausea that dissolves on tongue) I work at a preschool so viruses have come and gone. I fear it too. Is it true we she should get an unfill if this happens?

I would try to get a preventative Rx, too, if I was really afraid. I've read on these boards about people that throw up on a regular basis like it's no big deal. For me, it was a big deal. I threw up twice, both times were followed by horrific pain, that necessitated unfills to relieve the pain. It actually did wreck my band and my doctor had to do surgery again.

I'm not telling you this to scare you, because from reading these boards, lots of people with bands throw up, with apparently no ill effects. Also, remember there is a distinct difference between throwing up, and regurgitation -- regurgitation is spitting up with no forceful expulsion. But if you're concerned, have an anti-nausea medication available.

If you get the flu or stomach bug whatever, call your doctor and he/she will decide what needs to be done. Usually it is recommended that you have fill taken out. Throwing up can cause slips and if it means getting some fill taken out so be it....beats having to go back to surgery to be rebanded. Been there done that over a bout of vertigo.

Two weeks ago I experienced a stomach virus, and have not felt the same since vomiting twice.

My band has been feeling more restricted, and even sipping liquids has been difficult at times.

I went back onto liquids for 2 days post illness, and have been extra careful to choose foods which I know don't get stuck since then. I will definitely call my surgeon next week, as it does seem that I will need to have some Fluid removed. I hoped that given some time, the inflammation would calm. It seems that will not be the solution...

Wait until you have a problem to sorry about it. Meanwhile just take it easy and get used to your band. Fear is a poor motivator and leads to stress, which leads to eating... Capishe?

I had the flu this past week. I spent all Tuesday night throwing up. Didn't feel any different than it did pre band. Now had it kept up into Wednesday I would have called my surgen and asked for some anti nausea meds because to much vomiting can cause band slippage. Also I don't feel any more or any less restricted than I did before but everyone is different. This is just my personal experience

you should always contact your bariatrics doctor when you are throwing up and let him determine the course he thinks you need to take. The signs of my slip wasn't any pain, I could eat and drink....my only indication of something being off was constant burping....I had vertigo in Jan 2009 which caused me to throw up big time for a better part of an afternoon and all this led to me being rebanded later on in the year. My motto from that experience is it is better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry to say i threw up once. Not a PB or a relief vomit but honest to goodness vomitting. An i will be honest it killed ! IDK why it happened but after i was on liquids for a few days. Thankfully my band was fine but i do now keep anti naseau meds in the house.

It is something that if it happens once. Once is too many.

So dont worry but be wary. An meds are our friends

I just had a strange incident happen last night out of the blue. Around 2:30 in the morning I woke up feeling nauseated ( not typical) I rushed to the bathroom as I felt like I was going to heave, like stomach flu. Nothing came up it was horrible. My hubby got me the Zofran. I laid back down wit washcloth on head for about 30 minutes and fell asleep. But, I haven't felt much like eating food. I feel thirsty so I am drinking. So scared it could become a stomach virus. Just have a headache today. Not sure to go in tomorrow to check it out or just see. Middle of my back is killing me.

Skyvic..sounds like a gallbladder attack..been there..did you eat anything greasy, cheesy the night before ?

Yes Banderina I had a cup of popcorn and a hot buttered rum right before bed. Ok that probably was it...but the tummy flu going around at our school staff and kiddos. I'm so paranoid about getting sick. Those foods were a no no. It just didn't hit til later. Our bands a reminder of the behavior tools we need to follow right? I had just never had a reaction like that.

Gallbladder? Ill keep an eye on my symptoms for a bit. Thank you. It never hurt just queasy bad for short time.
