Carb Cycling- An Experiment Gone Right!

Recommended Posts

I only buy them on occasion because they are a little too good :). If you are looking for a Protein Bar Questbars are really good and the numbers on them are really good' date=' high Fiber content. They are a little pricey, but I can never find bars with less than 25-30 carbs each.[/quote']

I LOVE Quest bars...I toot a lot with them though....but they are really healthy and super delicious. Best bang for the net carb / Protein buck.

I could not imagine eating some of the carb items, as they would get stuck. I can only eat 1/2cup to 3/4cup of food per meal and it is usually tuna salad or chicken salad or similar. I could never eat bread, nuts, etc., as it would get stuck!

I love Pasta, bread, rice, and potatoes. The only bread that gets stuck for me is the unhealthy kind- the fluffy processed white stuff. If I stick to whole wheat, I'm fine so long as I take small bites and chew it until mush.

Honestly, even if you're not on low carb, if you look at the nutritional info they seem to be a great way to get in some extra protein in the form of a healthy snack.< /p>

I can't wait to try them. The strawberry cheesecake looks yummy!

Well here's something interesting I learned today!

I don't know if this is in Chris' book and I just missed it (I admit to not reading thoroughly), but when you're counting carbs you shouldn't count fiber. That's why you see Atkins products on the grocery store shelves say "net carbs" but their nutritional info shows more carbs, It's because it's not counting fiber in your total.

The reason is, fiber doesn't effect the glycemic index, aka your blood sugar. In fact, your body needs fiber. Not only is it good for you and your bowels, it's also bulky and helps keep you full.

So...an example. Today is a low carb day for me. I've had:

41.6g Carbs

-5.8g Fiber

35.8 Net Carbs

So my carbs counted towards my daily allowance would be 35.8.

Just thought I'd share my latest research!

omg I love you! lol.. I was just asking my bf today if he knew what the "net carbs" mean. I use these wheat tortilla wraps and they have 5 net carbs yet they say 14 carbs in the back.. yes they included the fiber. I am so happy to know it doesn't effect the blood sugar levels! yay!!! :D and thanks much for the info! and Also girls.. those bars sound great! gonna check them out! Thanks!

Don't forget what 2012 said, too. That sugar alcohol doesn't effect your blood sugar and shouldn't be included in net carbs either. :)

I hope you like them! I just ordered some tonight from Vitamin Shoppe. I had also found this Protein bar recipe on youtube that you guys may be interested in, I have not tried it yet, but the carbs are only 16.9: http://www.youtube.c...?v=C8Qby2ZfwA4. If you click on the show more, it breaks down the nut values.

I am going to make these , thanks for posting this! Makes sense, Protein Bars are very expensive, this is a great way to save, and I like that you know what all the ingredients are. You can even doctor this up!!

Thanks for sharing!!

You are welcome. Sugar Alcohols will only show up in sugar free items, when they add sorbitol or another form of it. You can pull up the nutrition labels at the Atkins website to see an example to make it more clear. I was pretty happy when my nutritionist told me this and I trust her because she teaches other RDs at the University of Cincinnati and also had the lapband and kept her weight off for years, her picture is outside of the doctor's office door, she lost a huge amount of weight.

I saw it in my sugar free pudding last night. Was kinda funny because I had enough calories in my budget for it, but it was a low carb day, and I didn't want to go over in carbs. But I looked and sure enough when I subtracted the sugar alcohol, it fit into my carb budget. YAY!!

So you subtract sugar alcohols like the fiber which will give you the net carbs? i'm kind of confused with that one.. I only see 0 sugar alcohol on my stevia.

Yes correct. Stevia wouldn't have it because Stevia is an organic sugar substitute. Look on the back of something sugar free, like sugar free pudding, and you'll see sugar alcohol.

Here, I found a pic. I put a red arrow pointing to the sugar alcohol.

So this sugar free cookie would only actually count as 10 carbs, because you subtract 3 for fiber and 3 for sugar alcohol.

This isn't for everyone, that's for sure. Some do low carb, some don't restrict carbs at all, and some vary between the two. Everyone needs different things to be successful.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
