Starting A New Journey; Support/advice

Recommended Posts

About to embark on a new journey in my life. I don't even have a surgery date yet and I feel I am already feeling like my life is changing for the better. I haven't lost any weight (of course I haven't had the surgery yet lol) but yet I feel I am not as disgusted with the photos of myself as I was before. Dont get me wrong I am still fat and ugly (I know it's a state of mind but it's my mind lol and how I see myself). I think it's because I know I am about to do something that will hopefully change my life forever.

So I finally found a doctor to do the lap band. He says I have to get a scoop done and a sleep study. I also have severe asthma so I have to get an approval by my asthma specialist before I can get it. I am so scared that one of the test will come back with something wrong where I can't have it done. Or my asthma specialist wont approve it. My biggest fear is if I do get it I don't loose the weight or something happens and I have to get it taken out. I have lost weight many times in the past. I would drop 40 to 65 lbs and within a year I gain it back plus more. I know mental I can make this life change, i.e. diet and exercise but scarred of the what ifs. My husband is so supportive with this but he is extremely skinny and so is his entire family so he has never dealt with weight loss issues so it's hard for me to turn to him for advice or help when he says it's all about exercise and Portion Control when he eats more than me lol. I am trying to stay strong and think of the future of what my life can be without being so fat.

So I guess the biggest question is.... Is there anyone else that is going through this and having the same thoughts? I have looked and looked for all kinds of online support groups. It would be nice to have someone or several folks that I can talk to or ask questions while I embark on this life long journey.

Hi, Wishuponastar!

I'm right there with you. I've been doing the six month nutrition counseling which my insurance requires (I just had my third visit, halfway there!) and even though I have actually gained a few pounds since I started, I am feeling good. I think I'm feeling good because I actually am taking some serious steps to get my life back. I've lost 20-30lbs here and there, but then gained it all back plus some. I really feel like the band will be a great tool to help me get back to where I should be to be healthy.

Best of luck to you with your endeavor!

Miss Cat

I am right there with you on starting a new journey. My ins requires 6 month with doctor or 3 months with nutritionists. I am 4 months in with my doctor but didnt feel she was documenting enough so I am goin to start seeing a nutritionists as well. ( Cant hurt to have extra documentation for the ins comp). I have met with my surgeon and they require coming to a 6 hour seminar and it was great and informative. I am hoping to be banded in Novemember or December fingers cossed! I would love to keep in touch and have someone who is in the same steps in this journey as myself to talk to.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
