A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?

Recommended Posts

I only had broth, sugar-free Gelatin and Protein Drinks during the first week after surgery. But I really didn't feel like eating anything else, everybody is different. You have to remember that you are probably completely infilled and only have the band in right now. Once you heal then the fills will start and you will have restriction. At the moment, if you did not have the swelling from the surgery, you would be almost as open as before.

No, it's not odd to be able to eat as much as you are saying. Just be careful and try not to overdue it. It's hard so don't beat yourself up if you slip. As soon as you heal you need to get in and get those fills until you feel like you have the restrcition you are going to need to be successful with your weight loss.

hey, long time no see. welcome back! ;)

I was 348 and 5'7". I had surgery 2 weeks ago, and I'm down 26 pounds. I lost 23 of those pounds in the first week. How often do other folks weigh themselves? I love the idea of a super sized forum!

I don't fit into your thread of starting at a BMI over 50, but while you know you're trying to get to a BMI that I started at, I'm drooling over all your heights! LOL.

We all want what someone else has.

No matter how much I lose, I still be very short and it will probably be harder for me to get to a normal BMI at a height of 5'0" (I have to be less than 128 lbs to be at the high end of "normal" weight) then it will be for most of you at 5'7" to 5'9".

I am just trying to achieve and maintain the lowest healthiest weight I can.

So many of you have had incredible weight loses.

Good Luck to us all!

I sure can relate to that!! I'm 5' also... one nurse even measured me at 4'11". I didn't accept that! I was 5'2" all my adult life and suddenly I'm 5'! I didn't look to see what the BMI charts say is a "normal" weight for me. I'm shooting for 150 at this point. When I get there, if I decide I want to go lower, that'll be time enough to make that decision. 128 sounds unattainable to me right now!!

Phyl, Well congrats on your weight loss. Almost 6 lbs a month. I'd take that!

i was banded on 11/27/07 and just had my first fill today. My next one is in two weeks. they told me not to expect this first one to do anything. After fills, I am on full liquids again for 2 days and then soft for two days, then back to normal foods that I can tolerate. Just working the process and trying to be the 'leader of my band".

I'm in the Northeast, where are you?

I am obviously new but learning fast and praying I don;t have complications along the way.

P.S. I used to be 5 feet and 1/2 inch. I guess I shrunk the 1/2 off! My husband is 6'4", what a pair!

First Surgeon appt/ Day of Surgery/ Current/Goal

216 212 202 140 (fingers crossed)

I am right there with you Phyl - 5' 1" last I checked. 150 sounds good to me, I can't believe I could ever get to 120-125 to be "normal". I am amazed at people that are over 200lbs and in size 14 or 16. I am still a size 22 after losing 104lbs. I have not idea how much I am going to have to lose to be able to shop in the "normal" clothes!

Well, I thought I'd figured out how to do the "multiquote" thing, but I guess not because it didn't work! Trying to respond to both of you.

Anyway, I'm in the SW right now, live in WA state, was born in Buffalo NY, though. We are "snowbirds" living in our RV for the winter near Palm Springs.

I'm transitioning from 3X to 2X. I was wearing a 28 bathing suit last season but bought a new one yesterday... size 22!! It's hard because when I'm looking at clothes, I'm still going to the 3X and above!

Nice to hear from other height challenged people!

PHYL, Palm Springs area is beautiful. Lucky you. Our daughter lives in Vegas, but we can't retire yet. When we do, we'd love to spend 1/2 the year with her.

Good for you, changing sizes feels so good doesn't it? I just ordered a smaller size pant ( 18w), the 20W are getting loose. Just anxious to be in the "regular" petite department. It's been a long time!

Major CONGRATS sweethinkr!!!

That is WONDERFUL....I can't wait until I am able to feel what it's like to lose 100 lbs. Keep up the great work!

I had some issues myself...I had a very HEAVY one this month which was 3 weeks after surgery, My norm is light and short. I think it has to do with the surgery. A question for you though... Were you taking Birth Control...before, during surgery??? I was told not to take any BC during, my OB Gyn suggessted that I started them after surgery. I haven't started them up yet personally. I agree with the other person that said it changes the meds in some way by crushing them up. My docs suggessted the I cut all my pills in half but not the gel caps.

IVE BEEN ON THE PILL SINCE 1987. the pharmacy assured me crushing them wasnt a problem. I took them for the duration. Finally!! my period stopped after three&1/2 weeks. My Dr. thinks its the wt loss. and my age. he said the peri menap test would not give an accurate reading because its only good when you have not had a period for 6 months. something about cell counts. I see my obgyn the 17th. Im just real glad Im off it for the holidays. Im bloted enough form eating holiday crap at work for two days now. ive had one fill and have no restrictions anymore, surgery is just a memory. I get full once in a while but not too bad. ill get back on track when Im done entertaining for the holdays. My cheating is probably worse in my head cuz i have'nt gained any wt, but havnt lost any this week eaither. this is the first time in months that I ate cheese and crackers !! but no bread, rice sweets. just hordevores that keep floating in. ah yea and a piece of See's candy. tradition ya know? lol. anyone else feeling the tugs of way too much fun food to look at? no one knows at work im banded they literally set things on my desk and walk away. its almost over now TG

Thanks

3 1/2 week period huh?? I have that about once a year - otherwise I don't have one at all. The docs totally believe it's because of my obesity. They've tossed around the idea of PCOS, which I've considered for a long time... Really, I don't mind not having a period, however I did think it would return with some weightloss! I've lost 79 pounds and still no sign...

I feel like I can finally write it. I am at 318 as of today and I think that I can actuall feel comfortable with the idea of being at twoterville. I've seen the thread, but did not post cause I did not feel like I was close enough, but 18.5 lbs to go.

This last fill seems to have really restricted me...I think I am where I'm supposed to be. Seems like only about 2 oz of meat and a little veggie and I am done for the meal. I have dropped a few lbs quickly after this fill as well. I will just wait and see how it goes. I always have a quick little drop after a fill, then about three weeks later I loosen up and need that next scheduled fill.

I am taking two weeks off from working with my trainer. It is the holidays and he said it is a good time to give my body a rest. I still need to keep up the cardio on my own. I can't wait to be able to run and start sprints. He says that will really get my heart rate up and boost my metabolism...can't wait for that to happen:-)

Merry Christmas to you all!

Mary

I started out with a BMI of 51 in the Extremely Obese category. Well I am happy to report that I am now considered merely obese with a BMI of 34, I will be happy to make it to the overweight category and if ever to the "normal weight" category.

Hello Everyone...and Merry Christmas!!

I just dropped by for a little encouragement. I love reading all the posts. Got a big Christmas dinner to face today... I haven't been doing all that well. I got banded on Sept. 6, 2007. I still haven't had a fill because my darn port cut is taking forever to heal. It looks like it finally has though and maybe I will get a fill when I go in on Jan 2nd. Then maybe I will finally be able to lose again. Thanks to all for all the inspiration and I hope you have a GREAT holiday!! bev

For me I am 5'4" and I am also shooting for 150 as an ultimate goal. I will reevaluate it when I get closer but I think 150 sounds small enough for me right now. heck 200 seems pretty far away right now. But I know I will get there if I work hard and dont look at the numbers.

I have to go buy a scale this week. My fill dr requiers a once a week weigh in on your own scale or he will not do a fill.

So I have to go buy one.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
