I, too, was banded on 7-19. I'm continuing to have shoulder pain and wondering if I should be. I haven't taken any pills except for chewable Multivitamin. Are you still having shoulder/gas pains? Or pains in your stomach?

my shoulder pain lasted 7 or 8 days. continue to take your meds to help with pain and move your arm or use a heating pad if it helps. you should be taking liquid (or very very crushed pills).

always ask your dr with any concerns. i promise it does get better :)

So your doctor told you not to take pills but you did it anyway?

I seriously doubt that you have done any damage but you should call your dr surgery anyway.

And follow your dr's instructions, after all, he/she is the trained, experienced professional.

Congratulations on your recent banding! I was banded 07/09 and like the previous poster said, it does get better! The best thing that helped me with the gas and my shoulders were tight as could be for the first 2 days, I thought it was the couch, lol, but walk, walk, walk. I also took gas-x, but walking somehow helps your body absorb it faster and this helps get rid of the pain. And the only pills you should be taking is if they prescribed you any, I only got some for nausea that were really small and I fortunately only needed once and the liquid pain killer was very helpful. I was told I could take Aleve also, but always ask your doctor, this is just what my doc said.

Thanks for the replies! It's good to know what others have experienced. I'm in this for the long run, so I have every intention of following my doctor's orders to a "T"! The liquid pain reliever knocks me out, but I think I'll deal with it for a few more days until the shoulder pain goes away. I haven't been nauseous at all - in fact, I haven't had an appetite at all yet either! (Hope that lasts!)

You should not be swallowing pills at this stage of post op recovery...to be safe, you would need to crush the pills and then mix with a very small amount of liquid or applesauce.

I would definitely check with my surgeon before taking any medication that they did not prescribe for you.

It's really very simple. If your doctor tells you not to swallow pills, don't swallow pills. If you feel you absolutely must take a pill, call your doctor's office and discuss it with the doctor or a nurse before you take the pill.

Some of the gas you're having is in your abdominal cavity, not your intestines, so swallowing a Gas-X pill isn't going to help it even if the pill manages to get through your stoma. In the meantime, the pill slowly dissolving in your esophagus or stomach pouch can cause a lot of irritation. I speak from experience here, having spent hours in 2 different emergency rooms after swallowing an antibiotic capsule.

Do not open capsules or crush pills without asking your doctor or pharmacist first. Some medications, like time-released formulas, must be taken whole (or at least in pieces). You can get an inexpensive pill splitter or crusher at any drugstore.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
