How long after surgery did you start doing an abdominal workout?

I started this weekend. I am 3 weeks post op. Did a light crunch workout in the pool. I didn't want to over do it. I will probably do that this week and see how I feel at the end of the week.

My dctor said 6 weeks....but I'm 3.5 months out and still have quite a bit of discomfort when I try to do a little more. He told me it may always be like that, that I shouldn't worry about "messing it up" so I continue on...but boy does that port site get sore.

I'm 8 months out and still cant do crunches but I do planks and other core exercises. It took me several months before I felt ok to do it.

It really is a decision that should come from your doctor, as its quite importat to get it right .

I wouldn't worry about abs right off. While you heal, focus on just getting your heart rate up doing something like walking or swimming. It'll condition your body and build endurance so that you can ease into a more serious workout better when the time comes. :)

Thanks for all the tips. I am not worried about it right now and h e been doing other exercises but o was just wondering because every person is different and their instructions from the doctors are usually different.

I started on weight machines about 4 weeks out. I started doing real ab workouts when I started doing kickboxing at about 2 months out. For a number of months after I felt twinges of pain near my incisions during my ab session but nothing unbearable and I just ignored it. So don't worry if it's a bit sore, just push through.

Listen to your body and talk to your doctor. Between the two you'll be able to find your sweet spot for workouts. :)

I am on my 4th week post op. I tried doing some light crunches day before yesterday. I had no pain or discomfort, so I did the same thing yesterday morning. By afternoon time, I was in excruciating pain! My dr said I could exercise and gave no restrictions but I probably won't try again with the crunches for another few weeks!

Huh?? Not sure what you are getting at. I've been banded 1.5 years and don't hold myself back from anything. I said in the first few months I had twinges but now nothing and I do not let anything hold me back.

Oh and I haven't been back to my doc for nearly a year, since I totally regret getting the band.

Why do you regret getting the band?

Because I realized all I needed to do was get my head in the right place. Which I guess the band helped me with in the beginning since I had semi restriction just with the band for the first 4 months and it taught me to eat better. After that I basically had no restriction. I did get one fill, but realized I didn't want anymore. I wanted to lose weight normally. I found a love for exercise and kickboxing. And unlike others that I've seen, if I feel a pain, I push through it. Not be like OMG I can't workout due to this pain. I keep messing up my knee in kickboxing, should I let it rest, well probably, but without working out I would be a miserable b***h. So at the advice of my trainer/friend/kickboxing instructor, I've been wearing a brace during class.

But I've gone off topic. I have not had any complications from the band, but I do get a stockfish feeling when I eat sometimes (mostly chicken at night when I'm at work, and it doesn't happen very often). But that pisses me off, since my band has like 0.75 mls in it. I now worry about erosion, and stuff and complications down the road. If I could I'd get the band taken out tomorrow.

I just meant there's a fine line between pushing yourself to progress and taking it too far to the point of injury. Whatever works for you! In my experience, I don't push myself as hard as I know I can because if I end up super sore the next day I am tempted to use that as an excuse to skip my workout.

It sounds like you've found your groove. The band isn't for everyone, just like kickboxing isn't. But would you have figured out what was right for you if you hadn't explored your options? ;)

If you're not already using some, you should look into supplements for joint support. It can really make a huge difference.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
